Subject and Verb
Be sure the Sentence has a Subject and a Verb
Example 1:
____ was backed up for miles on the freeway.
(a) Yesterday
(b) In the morning
(c) Traffic
(d) Cars
The right answer is (c) because it contains singular subject. Answer (a) and (b)
are not subject, so they are not correct. Although, answer (d) cars could be
subject, it is not correct because cars is plural and it does not agree with the
singular verb was.
Example 2:
Engineers ____ for work on the new space program.
(a) Necessary
(b) Are needed
(c) Hopefully
(d) Next month
In this example you should notice immediately that the sentence has a subject
engineers and that there is no verb. Because answer (b), are needed, is a verb, it is
the best answer. Answer (a), (c) and (d) are not verbs, so they are not correct.

Object of Prepositions
An Object of Preposition is a noun or a pronoun that comes after a
preposition such as in, at of, to, by, behind, and on to form a prepositional
phrase.
The trip (to the island) (on Saturday) will last (for three hours)
This sentence contains three objects of prepositions. Island is the object of
preposition to; Saturday is the object of preposition on; hours is the object
of preposition for.
An object of preposition can cause confusion in the Structure section of the
TOEFL test because it can be mistaken for the subject of a sentence.

A preposition is followed by a noun or pronoun that is called
an object of the preposition. If a word is an object of a
preposition, it is not a subject.
In this example, you should look first
To mike ___ was a big surprise. for the subject and the verb.
(a) Really Mike is not the subject, Mike is the
object of preposition to.
(b) The party
The verb of this sentence is was,

Answer A, C and D are incorrect because they cannot be subject. The most
possible answer to be a subject is answer A.
