ECC for Civil Engineering Students

This document summarizes a seminar presentation on Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). The objectives of the seminar are to understand the mechanical properties of ECC and study its self-healing properties. ECC contains cement, sand, super plasticizer, fly ash, and polymer fibers, but not coarse aggregate. It has advantages like high strength, durability, self-healing properties, and crack resistance. Applications include flexible concrete roads and bridges without joints. A case study on Mihara Bridge in Japan used ECC to reduce deck slab thickness and avoid expansion joints.

Introduction
 ECC.

 It is reinforced with polymer fibers.

 However, coarse aggregate are not used in

ECCs hence it is a cementitious composites
rather than concrete.

12/13/2019 3
Objectives

The main objective of this seminar topic is to,

 Understand the mechanical properties of

engineered cement composite

 Study the self-healing property of engineered

cementitious composites in natural environment

12/13/2019 4
Principle Involved

 In plain concrete structural cracks (micro-cracks)

develop even before load is applied

 The main role of fibres is to arrest the crack that

develop in the cementitious composite and
increase the ductility of it

12/13/2019 5
Materials of ECC

 Cement

 Sand [ Fine Aggregate]

 Super plasticizer

 Fly Ash

 Polymer fibres

 Water

12/13/2019 6
Advantages of ECC
 This cementitious composite has the ability to
bend like a metal

 It is more stronger and more durable

 It has a self-healing property which reduces the

maintenance cost of the structure

 It is more resistant to cracking

 It can be used as precast concrete

12/13/2019 7
Disadvantages of ECC

 It has a high initial cost as compared to

conventional concrete

 It requires skilled labor for its construction

 It’s quality depends on the material used and the

condition under which it is made

12/13/2019 8
Applications of ECC

 In flexible concrete roads and bridges there is no

need of joints such as expansion joint, as the
ECC itself has the ability to change its shape

 ECC overlays can be used over cracked

concrete structures

Difference between ECC and normal concrete
 ECC does not use coarse aggregate as it effects
the ductility of the mix, while in normal concrete
it is an important component

 Their behavior towards strain is also different.

The strain hardening behavior of ECC is similar
to ductile material while normal concrete is brittle
in nature

Objectives

 To reduce the thickness of deck slab

 To avoid expansion joint

12/13/2019 13
Features

 Mihara Bridge in Hokkaido, Japan in 2004

 Cable stayed bridge

 Length : 1000m

 ECC layer thickness : 38mm

 Expected service life : 100 years

Conclusion

 Reduction in thickness of the deck slab, reduces

the dead weight of the superstructure
 Replacement of expansion joint by ECC
increases the durability of the structure
 Utilization of relatively small amount of fibers
(less than or equal to 2%) ensures economic
feasibility in practical applications
