MEET PHOTOSHOP
Photoshop is the leading professional
image editing program, released by
Adobe.
Photoshop is useful for both creating
and editing images to be used in print or
online. Easy to use, but full of high-
quality features, Photoshop is the best
choice for any image manipulation job.
MEET PHOTOSHOP
•Create and modify images
•From basic to advanced image
enhancements and manipulations for
print, web, and apps.
•Create videos and animation
•Work with 3D content, primarily works
in raster images.
ADVANTAGES
•Easily Make Small Edits: One of the biggest advantages
is the fact that a person can easily make small edits on
photos that would otherwise be difficult. Changing skin
tone, creating a high-resolution copy of the photo,
adjusting brightness or removing a blurry area can be
done in just a few clicks when using it. Removing errors in
a photo, changing the background or removing a
background entirely are all tasks that can be performed
with ease when using Photoshop.
ADVANTAGES
•Strengthen Your Skills: This
is a great program to use for
anyone who is looking to teach
themselves how to do
advanced editing. Adobe also
offers tutorials and guides for
people wanting to further
expand his or her skill set.
ADVANTAGES
•Professionalism: Photoshop is often used to take
substandard photos to a professional level, which is one of
the main advantages of the software.
DISADVANTAGES
•Not Great for Beginners:
While Adobe Photoshop can
be a good learning resource,
the program isn't well suited
for beginners. Very basic
functions within the program
are usually the extent of what
an absolute beginner can
figure out on his or her own.
DISADVANTAGES
•High Price Tag: When looking at
the advantages and disadvantages
of Adobe Photoshop, the price is a
major factor. The software is
proprietary software that's
extremely expensive. Cheapest
plan starts at P500/month, or
P6,000 annually.
Doing minor photo editing could likely find the functions he or she
needs in a cheaper and more basic program.
DISADVANTAGES
•Full Functionality may be out of
Reach: Unless a person is well-
versed in photo editing or using
this type of software, he or she
will likely not even know how to
find the more advanced functions
available, let alone use them. This
poses a problem when the price
of Photoshop is taken into
consideration.
HISTORY
The raster graphics editing software Photoshop, currently produced
by Adobe Systems, was originally created in 1988 by brothers John
and Thomas Knoll. The first retail version of Photoshop was released
exclusively for Apple Macintosh computers in 1990.
HISTORY
The original program created by Thomas Knoll was called Display. It
was much simpler, but his brother John was impressed and thought
it was like software he used on his job at Industrial Light and Magic.
After further development, the program was called ImagePro, but the
name was changed due to a conflict with an existing software. By the
time Apple first saw it in 1998, it had been named Photoshop, and
the name stuck.

PHOTOSHOP INTERFACE
1. Tools panel: Contains all the tools that you can use in
Photoshop. It’s important to know that each icon on the toolbar
represents a stack of tools that you can access by clicking and
holding down the mouse button over the tool’s icon.
2. Options bar: This is a context-sensitive area in which you can
select options for your current tool. These options can be tricky
when you’re starting out with Photoshop and following tutorials. If
you don’t see the options that you want in this area, double-check
to verify you have selected the correct tool.
PHOTOSHOP INTERFACE
3. Menu bar: This is the standard application menu bar that displays all the
menus for Photoshop.
4. Workspace switcher: This menu on the Options bar enables you to
choose preset workspaces and save the layout of your customized
Photoshop interface.
5. Panels: This highly customizable area includes the default panels for the
application. These can be easily customized, moved, rearranged, or resized
according to your needs. We’ll get into the way to do that in just a bit.
6. Document window: This area contains your work area and canvas.
IMAGE SIZE, DIMENSION & RESOLUTION
Resolution
It is the number of pixels on a printed Resolution
Level
Resolution
(pixels/inch) suited to
area of an image. The higher the
resolution, the more pixels there are on
72 Low screen images
the page, the better the quality of the
image. However, high resolution
increases the size of the file. The 150 Medium printing to inkjet
standard recommended resolution for
printed images is 150-300, for Web professional
300 High
printing
images it is 72.
IMAGE SIZE, DIMENSION & RESOLUTION
• Pixel dimensions measure the total
number of pixels along an image’s
width and height.
• Resolution is the fineness of detail in
a bitmap image and is measured in
pixels per inch (ppi). The more pixels
per inch, the greater the resolution.
• Generally, an image with a higher
resolution produces a better printed
image quality.
• In Photoshop, you can see the relationship between image size and
resolution in the Image Size dialog box (go to Image > Image Size). ALT +
CTRL + I
IMAGE SIZE, DIMENSION & RESOLUTION
• The file size of an image is the digital size of the image file, measured in kilobytes
(K), megabytes (MB),or gigabytes (GB).
• File size is proportional to the pixel dimensions of the image. Images with more
pixels may produce more detail at a given printed size, but they require more disk
space to store and may be slower to edit and print.
• Image resolution thus becomes a compromise between image quality (capturing
all the data you need) and file size.
• Photoshop supports a maximum pixel dimension of 300,000 by 300,000 pixels
per image. This restriction places limits on the print size and resolution available
to an image.
• Another factor that affects file size is file format.
COMMON FILE TYPES
• Graphics file formats differ in the way they represent image data (as pixels or
vectors) and support different compression techniques and Photoshop
features. To preserve all Photoshop features (layers, effects, masks, and so
on),save a copy of your image in Photoshop format (PSD).
• Like most file formats, PSD supports files up to 2 GB in size. For files larger
than 2GB, save in Large Document Format (PSB),Photoshop Raw (flattened
image only),TIFF (up to 4 GB), or DICOM format.
• The standard bit depth for images is 8 bits per channel. To achieve greater
dynamic range with 16- or 32-bitimages, use the following formats:

SAVING FOR PRINT
When preparing images for print, the highest quality images are desired.
The ideal file format choice for print is TIFF, followed closely by PNG. With your
image opened in Adobe Photoshop, go to the "File" menu and select "Save As".
