HISTORY OF DANCE
 The word DANCE comes from the German word
“damson”, which means “to stretch” or “to drag”.
 Dancing- may be the oldest among all the arts.

- is an art that needs no instrument


because the dancer’s body is the instrument.
 Dance- is considered the mirror of the society
because it responds to historical and religious events
as well as social and political statements.
ANCIENT CIVILIZATION
 Ancient Greece
Dance was the ancient Egyptian’s primary way of
expressing their religious services and teaching
about their ancient myths.
Major Dancers:
1. The King
2. The Priests who performed magical dances for the
gods and other spiritual entities
3. The Virgin dancers who were trained to perform
during ceremonies led by the priests
 Ancient Crete
Greek writer Homer- the Cretans had an excellent army
because they used dance to perfect their training
 Ancient Greece

Phorai and Cheironomia- Greek terms that describe


carriage of the body during dance and mimetic gestures.
Schemata- refers to the form and shape of gestures,
focusing on how a dancer executed the short movement
patterns.
Deixis- was pure dance, performed by a male Greek dancer
who portrayed the essence of a human character, an
animal, or a natural element such as fire or wind.
 Rome- their dance were primarily performed for
religious, social, and entertainment purposes.
 Salii- or the college of 24 dancing priests that were
members of the noble class did war dances in full armor
with a sacred shield in their left hand and a staff in the
right.
 Pantomime- refers to a performance by an actor or solo
dancer who does not speak but acts in a stylized form.
DIFFERENT STYLES OF DANCE
 Ballet- acts as a backbone for many other genres of dance.
There are 10 fundamental ballet dance movements. They are
the following:
1. Plie
2. Releve
3. Saute
4. Arabesque
5. Balance
6. Chaines
7. Changement
8. Chasse
9. Developpe
10. Jete
 Modern Dance- is a dance style that rejects many strict
rules of classical ballet, focusing instead on the expression
of inner feelings.
There are 10 Fundamental Modern Dance Movements.
They are the following:
1. Laterals
2. Spiral
3. Stag Leap
4. Stag Turn
5. Primitive Squat
6. Flat Back
7. Hinge
8. Contraction
9. Release
10. High Release
 Ballroom Dancing- is a formal social dancing for
couples, where one person leads and the other follows
the steps.
- It is popular both as a recreational and a competitive
activity.
- The word “ball” is from the Latin word ballare, which
means dance.
- There are two main types of ballroom dance, Standard
and Latin.
TYPES OF BALLROOM DANCING
- Standard Dances- are smooth, flowing ballroom
dances that move around the entire dance floor in a
counterclockwise direction.
1. Foxtrot- an elegant dance whose objective is to
travel smoothly around the dance floor.
2. Waltz- is a smooth, progressive dance that travels
around the line of dance, characterized by its “rise
and fall” action.
3. Tango- it is a sensual ballroom dance that originated
in South America during the early 20th century.
4. Viennese Waltz- it is the first ballroom dance to be
performed in the closed hold position.
5. Quick Step- it is an up-and-down, rise-and-fall
swinging motion performed at a fast pace.
 Latin Dances- these dances stay in one place on the
dance floor. They are energetic dances and reflect the
shift in rhythm of the music being danced to.
1. Cha-cha-cha- it is a derivative of the mambo and also
a stepchild of the swing. It is danced with a triple step
and a break and check.
2. Jive- it is a very happy, boppy, energetic dance with a
plenty of knee-lifting, bending, and rocking of hips.
3. Samba- it is one of the five international Latin dances
developed in Brazil during the 19th century.
4. Paso Doble- the dance is very lively and dramatic with
long full steps and forceful movements.
5. Rumba- considered the sexiest of the ballroom dances
and it tells the story of love and passion between a
strong man and a teasing woman.
 Hip-Hop- one of the most popular dances because it encompasses
athleticism, flexibility, energy, agility, power, and soul.

 Cheer Dance- physical activity with a combination of
different dance genre and gymnastics skills such as
tumbling, pyramids, tosses, and stunts.
