LEADERSHIP ROLE OF A
NURSE IN THE
MANAGEMENT OF
INFORMATION SYTEM
• New roles and responsibilities are emerging in
nursing as we become aware of the
profession’s information systems and the
benefits of the computer as a tool to manage
them more effectively.
• This new technology challenges us to do more
than learn to operate new machinery. The
complexity and cost of different computer
systems and rapid changes in hospital
computer technology require nursing leaders
to have an understanding of many key issues.
• Only a sound knowledge of hospital
information systems and a keen
understanding of nursing practice and the
information systems which support it will
enable us to obtain computer tools useful to
the profession.
Information System
• Health information systems are important
tools to support decision making and assist
nurses in their daily interventions. The
Information System for Nursing Practice
promotes consistent nursing records, as it is
directed to the nursing practice and process.
Leader
• A leader can influence others through
effective communication and insight. Leaders
have a vision for the future that they inspire
others to pursue. While some may think of
“nurse manager” and “nurse leader” as
interchangeable terms, they are not. Not all
managers are leaders, and nurses can lead
without being in management positions.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF NURSE LEADERS
• One responsibility nurse leaders have is to
advocate for patients, nurses and the
profession. According to The Online Journal of
Issues in Nursing, “This advocacy can include
actions both to ensure appropriate resource
assignment and to promote positive work
environments.” Advocacy skills include
problem-solving, communication, and
collaboration.
• According to a Nursing World article, “It is
essential that point-of-care nurses develop
and use advocacy skills to address workplace
concerns, promote positive work
environments, and advocate for the
profession.”
• According to Patient Safety and Quality
Healthcare, “As healthcare focuses on an
increasing number of safety initiatives, nurse
leaders are key to successful outcomes.” The
article goes to state that key leadership
strategies include the following:
1. Emphasizing a patient-centered
environment.
2. Sharing a vision for excellence.
3. Visibility on the clinical units.
4. Active and visible partnerships with physician
colleagues.
