Colonial Architecture in India

Colonial architecture in India was influenced by British rule between 1615-1947. Key buildings from this period include Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate and Parliament House in Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, and Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. The architects Sir Edward Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker were responsible for planning New Delhi, designing government buildings there in a blend of European and Indian styles. Colonial architecture reflected both neoclassical and Gothic influences, combining elements of domes, arches, and traditional Indian features like chhatris. Urban planning also expanded under the British, who developed new institutions, suburbs, and industrial areas.
