PHILIPPINE INVENTIONS
GROUP 4
Agapito Flores – Patis
Patis (fish sauce) has been around for less than
100 years. It was discovered by Aling Tentay,
also known as Ruperta David after the Japanese
occupation. Aling Tentay used the juice of fish
fragments from the dried fish they sell in the
market.
Roberto Del Rosario - Karaoke Machine
He developed a sing along system in 1975
and patented it in t 1980s called his sing-
along system “Minus-One”, now holds the
patent for the device now commonly known
as the “karaoke machine”.
Roberto Del Rosario, a Filipino, is claiming
the right for the invention of the Sing-Along-
System (SAS) that eventually led to the
deveopment of Karaoke, a Japanese term
for “singing without accompaniment”.
Aisa Mijeno - Salt Lamp
An engineering professor at De La Salle
University - Lipa in the Philippines who
engages in social work and Greenpeace
projects, invented this alternative lighting
system that does not use batteries and
harmful chemical like kerosene to work.
This Electrochemical LED lamp (2014)
works by dissolving two tablespoons of salt in
a glass of water - a saline solution which
functions as electrolyte. Salt can provide light
up to 8 hours and is also capable of charging
smartphones and other low power mobile
devices using a USB cable.
Leonardo Sarao - The Jeepney
The founder and owner of the Sarao Motors, a
company known for designing, manufacturing and
selling the jeepney, the most popular mode of
transportation in the Philippines. He is not the first
person to alter the surplus jeeps left behind by the
U.S Army from World War II, but he saw them as a
business opportunity for mass transportation. He
redesigned the surplus jeeps to increase its
functionality by extending the body to accomodate
at least twice the number of passengers and by
putting some railings at the back and top for extra
passengers to cling to, and for cargoes. He
revolutionized a burgeoning industry and changed
the life of generations of Filipinos.
Gregorio Zara - Videophone
He is a renowned Filpino engineer and physicist.
He was the inventor of the first videophone.
A native of Lipa, Batangas and enrolled at the
Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) in
the United States, and graduated with a degree
of BS Mechanical Engineering in 1926.
The two-way television telephone or videophone
in 1955 patented as a “photo phone signal
separator network”.
Narciso Mosuela - Superkalan
The superkalan is a stove that can be
powered by any substance that burns.
Narciso Mosuela of the Filipino
province of La Union invented it and
recived the Best Design award from
the Food and Agricultural Organization
(FAO) in 1987. Among the substances
that can power the Superkalan are
wood, paper, dried dung and leaves,
corncobs and coco shells. Mosuela
has also invented a functional rice
thresher.
Marc Loinaz – One Chip Video Camera
• The inventor of this camera-on-a-
chip technology is a Filipino who
works at Lucent Technologies’ Bell
Labs in the United States. For this
invention, Marc Loinaz received in
1999 an award given by the Tenth
Annual Discover Magazine Awards
for Technological Innovation. His
invention edged out the Rio
PMP300 MP3 player (a portable
player for MO3-encoded digital
music) in the personal
entertainment category
