Some Questions!!
What are the basic problems that an engineer
could face when trying to access information?
What is the need to maintain documents in
the form of drawings/ text, etc?
What is the need for version controlling?
What should be version controlled?
What should be done when there is an
Engineering Change Order - should the
resulting changes be captured?
Some more Questions!!
What should we do with the old designs,
when the new design emerges?
How do we co-relate the various teams
like the Design team, the Production Team,
the Manufacturing Team?
How do we manage the various life
stages of the product?
Does all these mean that companies
should shed their legacy systems and adopt
PDM?
PDM
When there is a Product, there is Data about
the product. This data has to be Managed
PDM - Where did it
originate?
Started with the Manufacturing Industry
The need for a PDM was felt because
engineers often had problems accessing the
information they needed.
How does it work??
PDM aims at maximizing the time-to-
market benefits of concurrent engineering
while maintaining control of data and
distributing it automatically to the people
who need it - when they need it.
Master data is held only once in a secure
'vault' where its integrity can be assured and
all changes to it are monitored, controlled
and recorded.
How does it work - contd...
Duplicate reference copies of the master data, on the
other hand, can be distributed freely, to users in
various departments for design, analysis and
approval.
When a 'change' is made to data, what actually
happens is that a modified copy of the data, signed
and dated, is stored in the vault alongside the old data
which remains in its original form as permanent
record
