Soft Drink

The document discusses waste management in the soft drink bottling industry. It describes the bottling process and the types of solid and liquid waste generated, including suspended solids, biodegradable organics, and pathogens in wastewater. It outlines waste management concepts like the waste hierarchy of reduce, reuse, and recycle and the polluter pays principle. Methods of waste treatment discussed include recycling of materials like bottles and refilling refillable bottles. Ozone treatment is also described as a way to sanitize water and air.

SOFT DRINK BOTTLING
INDUSTRY
A soft drink is a drink that does not
contain alcohol. Soft drinks are often
carbonated and commonly consumed
while cold. The most common soft
drinks are colas, flavored water,
sparkling water, iced tea, sweet tea,
lemonade, squash and fruit punch.

INDUSTRY
 Bottling operation
– Many bottling operations include large
format bottling as part of their bulk
water processing systems.
– Additionally, water store designs may
require filling and/or bottle washing
capabilities listed immediately below
 Slow Speed(60-150 bottles per hour)
 Medium Speed(300-450 bottles per hour)
 High Speed(600-1800 bottles per hour)
WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SOFT
DRINK BOTTLING INDUSTRY
 There are a number of concepts about waste
management which vary in their usage
between countries or regions. Some of the
most general, widely-used concepts include:
WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SOFT
DRINK BOTTLING INDUSTRY
 Waste hierarchy - The waste hierarchy refers to the "3 Rs" reduce,
reuse and recycle, which classify waste management strategies
according to their desirability in terms of waste minimization. The
waste hierarchy remains the cornerstone of most waste minimization
strategies. The aim of the waste hierarchy is to extract the maximum
practical benefits from products and to generate the minimum amount
of waste.
 Extended producer responsibility - Extended Producer Responsibility
(EPR) is a strategy designed to promote the integration of all costs
associated with products throughout their life cycle (including end-of-
life disposal costs) into the market price of the product. Extended
producer responsibility is meant to impose accountability over the
entire lifecycle of products and packaging introduced to the market.
This means that firms which manufacture, import and/or sell products
are required to be responsible for the products after their useful life as
well as during manufacture.
 Polluter pays principle - the Polluter Pays Principle is a principle where
the polluting party pays for the impact caused to the environment.
With respect to waste management, this generally refers to the
requirement for a waste generator to pay for appropriate disposal of
the waste

INDUSTRY

 Solid waste which includes:

– Commercial and industrial waste collection and
disposal
– Commercial and industries recycling
– Stationary waste compaction equipment
– Facilities management
– Confidential document destruction
– Waste audits
– Contract Dewatering
– Abrasive Blasting
WASTE IN THE SOFT DRINK
INDUSTRY
 Wastewater which contain:
– Suspended solid
– Biodegradable organics
– Pathogens
– Nutrients
– Refractory organics
– Dissolved inorganic solids
WASTE TREATMENT AND
DISPOSAL
 Recycling
– Recycling is the act of processing used
or abandoned materials, which would
otherwise be considered waste, for use in
creation of new products and goods. Many
everyday goods can be recycled, including
automotive equipment, batteries,
construction equipment, electronics,
metal, paper, organics, plastic, and paint
products in bottling industry
WASTE TREAMENT AND
DISPOSAL
 Refillable bottle
– a refillable glass bottle, used as few as
eight times, consumes less energy than
any other container including recycled
containers.
WASTE TREATMENT AND
DISPOSAL
 Ozone treatment
– Ozone is a natural sanitiser derived directly
from the air we breathe with no additives. It is
produced by passing oxygen through a high
intensity electrical field. In this way the oxygen
gas is changed to ozone gas, a short lived
powerful oxidiser.
– Ozone gas can be used to control pathogens
on produce in storage or it can be dissolved in
water to produce ozonated water, ideal for
washing and sanitising
WASTE TREATMENT AND
DISPOSAL
 Ozone work
– Water:
 Kill pathogens on the surface of the product, reducing losses
from spoilage
 Oxidise insecticides, reducing the residual remaining on the
product
 Provide safe and simple control of sanitisation levels
 Provide a safe and pleasant working environment
 Provide safe and simple disposal requirements.

– Air:
 Keep on killing pathogens on the surface of the produce
while it is in storage
 Reduce the spread of disease from damaged produce
 Slow the ripening process by oxidising ethylene gas
