DEFINITION
A blackboard or
chalkboard is a
reusable writing
surface on which text
or drawings are made
with sticks of calcium
sulfate or calcium
carbonate, known, when
used for this purpose,
as chalk.
HISTORY OF BLACKBOARD
The term "blackboard"
dates from around 1815
to 1825. while the newer
and predominantly
American term,
"chalkboard" dates from
1935 to 1940.
The chalkboard was
introduced into the US
education system in
1801.
DESIGN OF BLACKBOARD
Blackboard can be prepared
with a piece of plywood
about 30”X 40” and have
tray under the full width of
the board. The boards
should be mounted with the
bottom edge of the tray 36
inches above the finished
floor. Illumination of the
chalkboard or marker board
should be 10-15 lumens.

The highest grade chalkboards are
made of a rougher version porcelain
enameled steel (black, green, blue or
sometimes other colors). Porcelain is
very hard wearing and chalkboards
made of porcelain usually last 10–20
years in intensive use.

Graphic Board
It can be use
vertically,
horizontally in
any place like
educational
institutes and
administrative
offices.
White Board
It is used for
marker pen
writing and can
be erased
easily with
duster or
cloth.
Notice Board
It is framed
with aluminum
frame. Notices
can be fixed
with pins. It is
available in
different
colors.
Exhibition Board
It can be folded
and expanded
easily, both sides
are useable. It is
available in 2
panel, 3 panel
and 4 panel.
Advantages/Uses
Of Blackboard
It makes group instruction more concrete
and understandable.
If it is used properly, it can set standards of
neatness, accuracy & speed.
It can restore the attention of the group.
It initiates aural, visual sensations, helps in
learning.
It can be means of motivation and interest.
Teacher can draw attention of class to
salient features in the lesson

Questions and problems when planning class
work or approaching new subject can be listed
by the teacher on blackboard.
It can be used for variety of purposes like
graphs, maps, statistics, sketches & various
types of drawings.
It provides lots of space for creative and
decorative work.
Abstract statements can be clarified in
exposition stage & summary can be given at
recapituation stage.

Teacher can erase writings & drawings & can
start a fresh.
The chalkboard is inexpensive, especially
when the usable life of the board is
considered.
It is flexible in use in the sense that
instructors may use it, learners may use it
and changes can be easily made through
eraser.
Lots of writing space is usually provided
Disadvantages Of Blackboard
The chalkboard carries with it a "temporariness."
Material put on the board cannot be saved or made
permanent.
Chalkboards are often fixed in such a way that they
are not always at a comfortable height for all
potential users.
Being fixed, chalkboards can put restrictions on the
use of classroom space and classroom activities as
learners need to be placed where they can see the
board.
Problems can arise for learners who have vision
impairments

With age, use of certain types of chalk, and/or
improper cleaning practices, boards can become
"cloudy" as they retain chalk dust.
Motion cannot be easily shown.
A teacher's handwriting or spelling deficiencies
are most obvious when using the chalkboard.
Chalkboard work can be messy.
Writing on the board can be "down time" and
may break the class' s train of thought and/or
Discussion.
RULES OF WRITING ON
BLACKBOARD
Be prepared. See that
the chalkboard and
erasers are properly
cleaned and maintained.
Ensure that chalk is
available in sufficient
quantity; learners get
very tired of watching
instructors search
constantly during class
for a piece of chalk or
eraser.

keep writing to a minimum by using key words or
conceptual diagrams.
Do not fill the board, only salient features have to be
written.
Develop topics by using the board from left to right and
top to bottom.
Keep writing:
a) neat
b) large, heavy and high enough to be visible by all
c) brief
d) specific.
Practice writing in a straight line.

Learn to stand and/or move around so you do not block
the view of learners as you use the board.
Do not talk while writing on board. Face the group after
writing & continue discussion.
Put the chalk down when you are done with writing. This
reduces the chances for distraction caused by playing
with the chalk.
Avoid spelling mistakes.
Use the eraser to remove errors or make changes,
Using your hands only smears the chalk and may deposit
oil on the board, which can serve as a dust collector.
In erasing the board, use a down-sweep erasing motion.

When you are through with the material, erase it completely
so that it will not serve as a distraction while the next topic
is being considered.
Intersperse writing on the board with questions or verbal
emphasis. Keep the class aware of what is being put on the
board and why.
If important drawings or maps are needed on the board, a
instructor is wise to save time by:
a) doing them before class.
b) copying a projection on the board (from a filmstrip, slide,
or opaque projector) rather than "free-handing" it.
Chalkboard etiquette: if someone will be using the board
after you, please don't leave it for him/her to erase. It's
nice to clean the eraser against the board as well.
