Topic 7 Aerial Triangulation-2

Here are 4 advantages of aerial triangulation in fieldwork: 1. It provides economic advantages over traditional field surveying by requiring less manpower and allowing coverage of larger areas. 2. Most of the work can be done under controlled laboratory conditions, minimizing delays and difficulties due to adverse weather. 3. It does not require direct access to much of the property within the project area. 4. It can be used to locate property boundaries and corners to assist with field surveying tasks.

DCG3083: PHOTOGRAMMETRY

TOPIC 7:

AERIAL
TRIANGULATION

PREPARED BY:
PN.KHALILAH BT. MUHAMAD
Lesson Objectives:

At the end of this topic, student will able to:

7.1 Understand aerial triangulation
7.1.1 Explain aerial triangulation
7.1.2 Identify the usage of aerial triangulation
7.1.3 Identify the differences between aerial
triangulation and field survey
7.1.1 Introduction

• Aerial Triangulation:
The process of determining the X, Y and
Z ground coordinates of individual points
based on photo
coordinate measurements.
The procedure can be applied to
terrestrial photos as well as aerial photos.
7.1.1 Introduction

Aerial Triangulation:
In recent years with improved
photogrammetric equipment and
techniques, accuracies to which
ground coordinates can be determined by
these procedures have become very high.
Aerial triangulation is used extensively for
many purposes.
7.1.2 The Usage of Aerial
Triangulation
Extending or densifying ground control strips or
blocks of photos for use in subsequent
photogrammetric operations.

In property surveying, aerial triangulation can be

used to:
i) locate section corners and property corners
ii) locate evidence that will assist in finding these
corners.
7.1.2 The Usage of Aerial
Triangulation
• In topographic mapping, aerial
triangulation can be used to:
i) develop digital elevation models by
computing X, Y,
and Z ground coordinates of a
systematic network
of point in an area.
ii) densifying geodetic control networks.

Methods of Performing :
Methods of performing aerial triangulation
may be classified into three categories:
(1) Analog
- Involved manual interior, relative and
absolute orientation of the successive
models of long strips photos using stereoscopic
plotting instruments having several projectors.

Methods of Performing :
(2) Semi analytical
- Involved manual interior and relative orientation of
stereo models within a stereo plotter, followed by
measurement of model coordinate.
- Absolute orientation is performed numerically.
(3) Analytical
– methods consist of photo coordinate measurement
followed by numerical interior, relative and absolute
orientation from which ground coordinates are
computed.
