Division of 2 and 3-Digit Dividends by 1-Digit Divisors

The document provides examples and explanations of dividing 2 and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit divisors. It demonstrates long division by showing the process step-by-step, including identifying the dividend, divisor, and quotient. Remainders are also explained as any amount left over after dividing.

DIVIDING 2 AND 3-

DIGIT DIVIDENDS
BY 1-DIGIT
DIVISORS

Mathematics 4th. Grade

Ms. María Cristina Pérez
DIVISION
Division is splitting into equal parts or
groups. It is the result of "fair sharing".
Let´s see an example:

There are 12 chocolates, and 3

friends want to share them, how do
they divide the chocolates?

Answer: They should get 4 each.

Division can be expressed as:

Quotient Dividend
42
6 =6 Quotient

Divisor 7
7 42
Divisor 42 7 =
Dividend
Dividend
6 Divisor Quotient
The number is going to be divided. The
Dividend: total to be shared.

Divisor: The number of equal groups the dividend

is going to be divided into.

Quotient: The answer to a division problem.

Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
Because
Quotient x Divisor = Dividend

42 ÷ 7 = 6
Because
6 x 7 = 42
Math Action Words
Example I have $351 and want to share this money evenly with my
two brothers. How much will each of us get?

Find 351 ÷ 3 We stard dividing the biggest place

value, in this case the hundreds

117 1. What number times 3 is equal to 3 or close to 3?

1, because 1 x 3 = 3
3 3 5 1 2. Multiply and subtract.
- 3 3. Put the 5 down.
4. What number times 3 is equal to 5 or close to 5?
0 5 1, because 1 x 3 = 3.
- 3 It cannot be 2 because 2 x 3 = 6, more than 5. Each
sibbling will
5. Multiply and subtract. get $117
21 6. Put the 1 down.
21 7. What number times 3 is equal to 21 or close to 21?
7, because 3 x 7 = 21
0 8. Multiply and subtract.
Another Ms. Maria Cristy has 751 counters and she is going to share them
example between her 4 classes equally. How many counters will each class
have?

Find 751 ÷ 4 1. What number times 4 is equal to 7 or close to 7?

1, because 1 x 4 = 4
187 It cannot be 2 because 2 x 4 = 8, more than 7.
4 751 2. Multiply and subtract.
3. Put the 5 down.
- 4 4. What number times 4 is equal to 35 or close to 35?
8, because 8 x 4 = 32.
35
-32 It cannot be 9 because 4 x 9 = 36, more than 35.
5. Multiply and subtract.
6. Put the 1 down.
31 7. What number times 4 is equal to 31 or close to 31?
28 d er 7, because 4 x 7 = 28
ain It cannot be 8 because 4 x 8 = 32, more than 31.
Rem
3 8. Multiply and subtract.
Remainder: What is left over in a division.
Each class will have 187 counters
and Ms. Maria Cristy will have 3 left
over.

To check the division!!!

187 748
X4
And add the
remainder +3
748 751
Time to
