Noun and Its Types

Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. Nouns can be singular or plural, and have different uses including subject, direct object, indirect object, predicate nominative, appositive, object of preposition, and objective complement. There are also different types of nouns such as common, proper, abstract, concrete, countable, uncountable, compound, and collective nouns. Possessive nouns show ownership.

Noun & Pronoun


Noun
Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas.
Example:

Person
• Teacher Place
• Country • Pencil
THING

• Allama Iqbal • Lahore • Book


• Vendor • School • Flower
Nouns Can be Singular and Plural

• Singular Nouns:

Name only one person, place, thing and idea.

Examples:

One people, The book, A pencil


• Plural Nouns

Two or more persons, places, things or ideas. Most singular nouns are

made plural by adding (s) e.g. pencil is a singular noun. The word pencils

are plural noun.

Examples:

Two people, books, pencils, cats


Uses of Nouns
Subject: One being talked about
Example: He is crying.

Direct Object: Receiver of the action, it answers the question. What or Who
Uses Example: Sir Bukhari teaches Ayesha.

Of Example: The committee sent Ali his papers.

Noun Indirect Object: It answers the question. What AND Whom

Example: The leader of the group is jolly.


Predicate Nominative: Follows the form of the verb and repeats the subject.

Appositive: is a word that renames the nouns. That it follows and it always
follows a comma.
Example: Dr. Ashfaq Bukhari, HOD of Urdu Department.
Uses of Nouns
Object of the preposition: introduced by a (preposition).
Example: Hina puts the cell phone beside the cabinet.
Example. Prances, you are required to see the principal.
Objective Compliment: It modify the direct object.
Uses Direct Address: Addressing a person.
Example: They called the baby Theresa.
Of Example. Talha is a mayor of Baguio.

Noun
Subjective Compliment: Noun is placed after linking verb.

Types of Nouns
1. Common
These name general, nonspecific people, places, things, or ideas.
Examples:
man, city, religion, airline
2. Proper
These name specific people, places, things, or ideas.
Examples:
Imran Khan, Lahore, Islam, PIA
Types of Nouns
3. Abstract
They name something that you cannot perceive with your five senses.
Examples:
happiness, love, pride, religion, belief
4. Concrete
These name something that you can perceive with your five senses.
Examples:
eyes, lion, suitcase, flower, chocolate

5. Countable
These can be counted.
Examples:
clock/clocks and pencil/pencils, movie, train
6. Uncountable
These cannot be counted.
Examples:
milk, rice, snow, rain, water, food and music

7. Compound
These are made up of two or more smaller words.
Examples:
eyeglasses, New York, sunflower
8. Collective Nouns
They refer to a group of things as one whole.
Examples:
bunch, audience, flock, team, group, family

9. Possessive Noun:
These show ownership.
Examples:
Dad's car, the student's books and Ali's hat
