Structural Irregularities

The document discusses torsional irregularities in multi-storey structures. It defines important terms like drift, torsion, torsional irregularity. Torsional irregularity occurs when the maximum storey drift is more than 1.2 times the average storey drift. Irregular structures are more prone to damage during earthquakes compared to regular structures. The objectives are to analyze different structural models with irregularities and determine parameters like displacements and forces. Literature on previous studies analyzing the effects of mass and torsional irregularities is also reviewed.

INTRODUCTION
 A building is certified to be stable during its design process by checking the entire
structure for both vertical and horizontal irregularities which is mentioned according
to various international codes.
 The ill effects of irregularities are mainly experienced when a structure is subjected to
earthquake which leads to considerable damage and even the collapse of the
structure.
 Torsional irregularity is one such horizontal irregularity which has to be looked upon
while designing a structure.
 Before explaining the term torsional irregularity, one has to be acquainted with the
terms drift, story drift, eccentricity and torsion.
IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS
 Drift : Drift of a building in simple terms can be defined as the horizontal displacement
undergone by the building with respect to its base when subjected to horizontal
forces such as wind and earthquake loads. Thus story drift can be defined as the
displacement of one floor level of the building with respect to its adjacent level above
or below the considered floor level.
 Torsion : Torsion is an important structural action that increases member shear
strength. It occurs when it is twisted causing twisting force acting on the member,
known as torque, and the resulting stress is known as shear stress.
 Torsional Irregularity : The torsional irregularity is an imperative parameter which
measures the stretch out of torsion impact on the structures. It can be interpreted as
the proportion of highest drift to the mean drift of the individual storey.
Types of irregularities

 Horizontal irregularity (torsional)

 Vertical irregularity (mass)
 If dmax/davg > 1.2 then it is a torsional irregularity.
 If dmax/davg > 1.4 then it is an extreme torsional irregularity

(where dmax = MAXIMUM STOREY DRIFT

davg = AVERAGE STOREY DRIFT)

 In a symmetrical structure, “center of mass” coincides with the “center of stiffness”. Hence the
chances of torsional irregularity is LESS.
 In a asymmetrical structure, “center of mass” does not coincide with the “center of stiffness”. Hence
the chances of torsional irregularity is MORE.

Torsional Irregularities in actual condition can be avoided by :
 Increasing lateral stiffness along the column.
 Increasing the column size.
 Adding retaining wall.

MAXIMUM STOREY
MAXIMUM STOREY DRIFT DISPLACEMNET

In this case the storey drift is higher for In this case the storey displacement is
irregular structure higher for irregular structure.

Hence, regular structures are most commonly and ideally preferred instead of
irregular structures.
Plan irregularity

A structural system is considered irregular:

 when the plan’s symmetrical axes are not noticeably regular
and perpendicular to each other
 when there are projections or entrants majors to 20%
 when the vertical resistant elements to the lateral loads are
not parallel, nor symmetrical with respect to main the
orthogonal axes of the system that resists the lateral forces
 when discontinuities in a trajectory of lateral force exist, like
deviations outside the plane of the vertical elements
VERTICAL IRREGULARITY
 Structures having significant physical discontinuity in vertical configuration or in
their lateral force resisting systems are termed as vertically irregular structure.
 A regular shaped structure is more resistant to damage or collapse in
earthquake condition & perform better than other irregular structure
 A structure having irregularities results in non-uniform or linear load transfer in
different members of the structure.
 Their must be a continuous path or way for transfer of inertial force or
resistance force provided by the ground and load transfer to the gorund.
 Any discontinuity in this path can cause fall of structure and loss of economy &
life. Hence, study should be done on the load transfer of the structure of
irregularities using different methods.
OBJECTIVES

 To determine optimum position of shear walls by taking

irregular building plan.
 To determine the structural response under wind and seismic
loading using shear walls with the same cross sectional area in
different models
 To find parameters like storey displacements, base shear, and
relative storey drifts.
 To study the structural response for torsional irregularities.
LITERATURE REVIEW

STUDY OF TORSIONAL EFFECT UNDER SEISMIC CONDITION ON BUILDING WITH IRREGULARITIES - Ms.
Sandhya R. Ghuse1, Mr. Mayur K Ghumde (2016)
 The aim of this project is to study the effect of various types of irregularities in building regarding its
seismic behavior. To analyze the structural frames and develop guidelines regarding the seismic analysis
of irregular building.

STUDY ON MASS IRREGULARITY OF HIGH RISE BUILDINGS - Mr.Darshan, Miss Shruthi (2017)
 The effect of irregularity depends on the structural model used, location of irregularity and analysis
method. In this thesis, analysis will be carried out by ETABS software. The building is subjected to
dynamic analysis. One regular building with uniform mass is studied with 4 irregular buildings with
varying masses for Base shear, Mode shapes, storey drift, story shear, Torsion moment. Suitable codes
are used for analysis and design.
LITERATURE REVIEW

TORSIONAL IRREGULARITIES IN MULTI-STOREYED STRUCTURES - Mr.Adarsh, Mr.Rajeeva (2017)

 To assess the torsional effect on the structures in the present study 5 types of structures having same
different perimeter area are considered and strengthened by introduction of shear wall cores. A simple
linear comparison based on eccentricity is also carried out for the structures. Structures with asymmetric
distribution of mass and stiffness undergoes torsional motions during earthquake. The performance of the
structures is assessed as per the procedure prescribe in IS 1893:2002.
SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF MULTISTORIED RCC BUILDING DUE TO MASS IRREGULARITY BY TIME HISTORY
ANALYSIS. - Mya mya aye, P.narasimharao (2018)
 In this thesis design of structure for this building is carried out by using ETABS software and computer-aided
analysis. One regular building and three irregular buildings are compared. They have same plan size but
mass irregularity is considered at 6th floor, 8th floor and 10th floor of the building. The stability checking
such as storey drift, overturning moment and sliding are also checked in the building with static analysis
and also with dynamic analysis (time history analysis). And then, after the models with and without change
of mass and inter-storeyed height are being analysed.
