Pulleys With Sol)

The document discusses pulleys, which consist of a wheel with a grooved rim that carries a rope, belt, or chain. Pulleys allow a force to be applied at a different location or direction. Pulleys can transfer rotational motion between shafts to increase or decrease rotational speed. Pulleys are used in block and tackle systems to multiply force. First-order pulleys have one movable pulley. Pulley belts transmit power between motors and machine shafts by rotating one pulley to rotate another at a different speed. The document provides examples of calculating velocity ratio, effort, load, work, mechanical advantage, and efficiency in various pulley systems.

Pulley

Pulley
It consists of a wheel with a grooved rim carrying a rope, belt or chain
and supported in either fixed or movable bearing block. Pulley allows
the user to apply a force at a different location or in a different
direction. The pulley can be used to transfer rotational motion from
one shaft to another to increase or decrease the speed of rotary
motion.

VR and MA
First order pulley
•Pulley
No. 1 is fixed in position to
a support at top when an effort is
applied to lift the load except first
pulley all other pulleys move
vertically. VR is given by where n,
is the number of movable pulleys.
Pulley belts

•
Pulley belts transfer power by transmitting rotary
motion from one motor to a shaft in machine.

To achieve a faster output speed, the driver pulley

must be larger than the driven pulley. If the belts
are crossed then the direction of the rotation are
opposed to each other. If the belts are not crossed
then the direction will be the same for both
pulleys.
Calculate the VR and output speed for the system given below.
1. Mark the direction of the force due to tension.
Calculate the VR and effort.

2. The pulley system lifts a weight of 300N, what is

the VR, and effort applied if the efficiency is 60%.
3. A pulley system has five pulleys and supports 590N. What is the
VR and if the pulley is 75% what is the effort.

4. A pulley system with VR 4 is used to lift a load of 100N through

a vertical height of 15m. The effort required to 40N which is
applied in the downward direction. Calculate the distance through
which effort is applied. Work done by the effort, MA and
efficiency.
5. In the first order pulley system having three movable
pulleys, how much effort is required to raise a load of 5780 N
if the same system raises a load of 1200 N with an effort of
200 N? Assume the efficiency to be constant for the pulley
system.
6. A pulley system consists of two blocks, each containing
three pulleys and connected as shown in Fig. An effort of 400N
is required to raise a load of 1500 N. Determine (a) MA, (b)
VR, (c) the efficiency of the pulley system.
7. The MA of a machine is 5 and its efficiency is 75%. A load of 300N is lifted
to a height of 15m. Calculate the work done by the machine and the effort.
8. A pulley is 50% efficient. Calculate the effort required to lift 12kN if the VR
is 6. If the dead weight of the pulleys and hook is 500N what would the
effort be then?
