Mini Project

The document discusses the objective, introduction, working and features of an electronic voting machine (EVM). The objective is to develop the logic of an EVM using VHSIC Hardware Description Language. It explains that EVMs contain memory chips and cards to record votes electronically. When votes are cast, they are saved to the chip and memory card. After voting, the memory card is removed and votes are tabulated from it. The document also discusses the finite state machine and Moore and Mealy models used in the EVM design.

OBJECTIVE

 The main aim of the project is to develop the logic

of the electronic voting machine by using VHSIC
Hardware description language
INTRODUCTION OF EVM
 E-voting, or electronic voting, refers to computerized voting machines
that use electronic ballots rather than paper ones.

 Electronic voting is a term encompassing several different types of

voting, embracing both electronic means of casting a vote and electronic
means of counting votes.

 The EVMs were devised and designed by Election Commission of India in

collaboration with two Public Sector undertakings viz., Bharat
Electronics limited ,Bangalore and Electronics Corporation of India
Limited ,Hyderabad
WORKING OF EVM
 E-voting machines contain a memory chip and a removable
memory card. When voters cast their ballot, votes are recorded
to the chip and the removable memory card.

 At the end of an election, poll workers remove the memory

card and take it to a tabulation center, where the cards are
loaded onto a computer and the votes are tabulated to
produce unofficial election results.
 Here we are taking the different parties and then we are
assigning counters to the each and every party.

 When ever we press the button to the particular party then the
counter of that party will be incremented.

 When ever we press the two buttons of the two different parties
at the same time then we get an indication from the buzzer.

 The outputs of the EVM represents the number of votes for

different parties.

Electronic ballots
 Electronic voting systems may use electronic ballots to store votes in
computer memory. Systems which use them exclusively are called
DRE voting systems. When electronic ballots are used there is no risk
of exhausting the supply of ballots.

 These electronic ballots remove the need for printing of paper

ballots, a significant cost. When administering elections in which
ballots are offered in multiple languages.

 Electronic ballots can be programmed to provide ballots in multiple

languages for a single machine. The advantage with respect to
ballots in different languages appears to be unique to electronic
voting.
FINITE STATE MACHINE

 A finite-state machine (FSM) or finite-state automaton or simply a state

machine, is a mathematical abstraction sometimes used to design digital
logic or computer.

 The operation of an FSM begins from one of the states (called a start
state), goes through transitions depending on input to different states and
can end in any of those available, however only a certain set of states
mark a successful flow of operation.
 Design of FSMs Involves
 Defining states
 Defining transitions between states
 Optimization / minimization

STATE DIAGRAM
 A state diagram, also called a state machine diagram or
statechart diagram, is an illustration of the states an
object can attain as well as the transitions between those
states in the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

FEATURES

 An EVM can record a maximum of 3840 votes, which is sufficient for

a polling station as they typically have no more than 1400 voters
assigned.

 An EVM can cater to a maximum of 64 candidates. There is

provision for 16 candidates in a Balloting Unit.

 It is not possible to vote more than once by pressing the button again
and again. Even if one presses that button further or any other
button, no further vote will be recorded. This way the EVMs ensure
the principle of "one person, one vote".
 Voting security

 Timesaving

 Reduces man power

 More accurate

 Rigging is avoided

 Easy to transport

 Easy to Count the votes

FUTURE SCOPE

 For voting machine if MOTION SENSOR is used to

detect presence of person to vote, it will be provide
automatic polling security that is sensor will
identify is that the person appeared for vote and is
that he/she finished his vote or not, accordingly
controller will make the machine ready to accept
votes.

 More Security is possible by combining this EVM

with Biometric technology at the time of voting.
 Electronic voting systems hold promise for improving the efficiency,
accuracy, and accessibility of the elections process, and many are in
use across the country today.

 Multiple organizations have compiled recommended practices for

vendors and election officials to use to improve the security and
reliability of voting systems, and EAC has initiated activities to
improve voluntary voting system standards, system testing programs,
and management support to state and local election authorities.
