CT Scans: A Guide for Dental Students

CT scans use X-rays and computers to create detailed images of the inside of the body. During a scan, an X-ray tube rotates around the patient while they lie on a table that slowly slides through opening of the machine. X-rays are absorbed in different amounts depending on the density of tissues and organs. The absorbed X-rays are converted to light by detectors and sent to a computer to construct cross-sectional images of the inside of the body. CT scans are useful for diagnosing many conditions like cancers, infections, blood clots and bone fractures. They have advantages of being painless, fast, and able to image bone and soft tissues simultaneously with great detail. However, CT scans do use ionizing

? What is the ct scan

it is an xray medical imaging method, use a

combination of computers and rotating X-ray
machines to create cross-sectional and .three
dimensional images of the body
Ct scan machine
? How does ct works
a CT scanner uses a motorized x-ray source that rotates
around the circular opening of the machine (gantry).
During a CT scan, the patient lies on a bed that slowly
moves through the gantry while the x-ray tube rotates
around the patient, shooting narrow beams of x-
rays through the body. Instead of film, CT scanners use
special digital x-ray detectors, which are located directly
opposite the x-ray source. As the x-rays leave the patient,
they are picked up by the detectors and transmitted to a
.computer
Ct scan detector
each time xray source completes a full rotatation, the
computer uses techniques to construct a 2D image slice of
patient ,the thickness of each varies depending on the ct
machine used, and it ranges from (1-10 millimeters) ,the
image is stored and the motorized bed is moved forward
into ct scan gantry, then xray process is repeated to
produce another image slice, this process continues until
the desired number of slices is collected.
these
images can be displayed indivdiually,or stacked together
by computer to generate a 3D image of patient to show
skeleton ,tissues, and organs as wll as abnormalities that
.physician trying to identify
? what is ct scan used for
Diagnose muscle and bone disorders such as, bone tumors.1 
and fractures.
2.detect and monitor
diseases and conditions such, cancer ,heart disease, lung
nodules,and liver masses.

3.monitor the effectivness of certain treatment such as

cancer treatment (chemotherapy).
4.pinpoint the
location of a tumor, infection or blood clot.

5.detect internal injuries and internal

bleeding ,also guiding the procedures such as surgery, and
.biopsy
? What is the advantages of ct scan
Its painless, noninvasive, and accurate . .1
2. a major
advantage is that ct scanning has the ability to image bone,
soft tissue ,and vessels in the same time unlike conventional
xray .
3. provides a detailed image of many
types of tissues.
4.comparing to MRI ,ct scanning is less expensive ,more
available ,and detect abnormalites such acute bleeding and
.bone fractures better than mri
?Are there any risks using ct scanning
ct scan uses xrays that may produce ionizing radiation but the.1
risk is very smal ,and chances of developing fatal cancer is 1
in 2000, But radiation’s effect adds up over lifetime ,so the
risk increase with every ct scan person can get.

2. in some cases before

scanning ,a contrast material which is (a dye of iodine or
barium sulfate, may be introduced either by injection or
orally, that will bolck x rays and appears white by
highlighting organs or blood vessels), it may cause a allergic
reaction that can be mild as itching and rash or it can cause
.damaging effect on organs such kidney so care must be taken
