WHO

 WHO replaces pronouns and the


names of people. When the
question word is the subject, the
word order doesn’t changed.
Examples:
Columbus discovered America in
1942.
Who discovered America in 1942?

She won the contest.


Who won the contest?
Examples:
They will attend the party.
Who will attend the party?
NOTE: When the “wh” word replaces a word in
the predicate , and the verb includes a
modal(such as “can”, “will”, “may”) and a form
of “to be” , the predicate and the subject are
switched:

He is the president.


Who is he?
WHAT

WHAT replaces any noun or pronoun

Questions are formed “what” the same
way as with “who and “whose”.
Examples:

The car hit the dog.


What hit the dog?

Her bag is expensive.


What is expensive?
Examples:

Bryan’s favorite candy is chocolate.

WHEN replaces time specific words
(adverbials of time) when a modal, a
form of “be” or a form of the helping
verb “have” is used, the subject and
predicate are simply switched.
Examples:
Lorna’s appointment was at 4 o’clock.
When was Lorna’s appointment?

Today is her birthday.

WHERE

 Where is used in a question to express


a specific place, a specific address
that the person wants to know. It can
also be used to know the intention of
one’s moving or traveling.
Examples:
 She is in the kitchen.
 Where is she?

 I’m going to my Grandmother’s house.


 Where are you going?
WHY
 Why is used in a question to refer to the
reason of an occurred action or event. It
also refers to the cause of the occurred
event or action. This event or action has
been done or is taking place.
Examples:
 I’m sad because he broke up with me.
 Why are you sad?

 I was late because it’s traffic.


 Why were you late ?
WHICH

 Which is used in a question to express


a choice or a preference about the
likes and dislikes of a person. Often, in
the question, the person will have the
choice of two or more things.
Examples:
Which is your favorite add on, milk or cream ?
I prefer cream.

Which is better, the white or the blue one?


I want the white one.
HOW

 How is known as being an adverb.


Nevertheless, it is still used as a
question word. In the question it
expresses the manner in which an
action is done, a person feeling and/or
a means of transportation.
Examples:
I’m not feeling okay.
How are you feeling today ?

I drink a lot of water.


How can you run 10 miles without being tired ?
However, when the “wh ” word replaces a
word in the predicate, and the verb phrase
does not contain a modal, a form of “be” or
a form of the helping verb “have,” “do
formation” is used:

WH- word + “do” + SUBJECT + VERB

NOTE: “Do” always takes the tense of the original


verb, and the verb takes the base form:
Examples:

 Pat arrived early yesterday.


 When did Pat arrive early?

 Sharon usually laughs at my


joke.
 What does she usually laugh?
Examples:

 He sometimes calls me at
home.
 Where does he sometimes call
me?

 Monique types quickly.


Examples:
 Jack drove Bill’s car.
 Whose car did Jack drive?

 Bill bought a car.


 What did Bill buy?
Examples:
 John arrived at noon.
 When did John arrive?

 The baseball broke that window.


 Which window did the baseball
break?
Examples:
 John missed the bus because he
got up late.
 Why did John miss the bus?

 John ran quickly to school.


 How did John run to school?
