The Magic Wand Tool
 Ideal to use in selecting part of
the image with identical color.
 It creates a selection based on
the color of the pixels of the
image area that is clicked .
 It is represented by the icon
in the tools palette.
The Quick Selection
Tool
 Use to make a quick selection by painting
(dragging) a selection on the area of the
image that you want to be selected.
 Similar to magic wand tool it based the
selection on color and tone of the area being
selected.
 It is much smarter and precise compared to
the magic wand tool.
 It is represented by the icon in the tools
palette.
Activating Magic Wand
or Quick Selection Tool
 Select the Magnetic
Wand tool icon or the
Magic
Quick Selection tool icon Wand Tool
in the tools palette.
 Alternatively, you can
press [Shift]+[W] to
select either Magic
Wand or Quick Selection
tool in the tools palette.
Using the Magic
Wand Tool
1. Select the magic wand tool in the
tools palette.
2. Choose selection option in the tool
option bar (New selection, Add to
selection, Subtract from selection, or
Intersect with selection).
3. (Optional) Set the magic wand tool
options – Tolerance, Anti-alias,
Contiguous, and Sample All Layers.
4. Click on the area of the image with
the color that you want to select.

5. (Optional) To remove the excess selection, click the
Subtract from selection option in the tool option bar
then click on the area that want to be removed from
the selection. If there are areas which is not covered
by the existing selection, select the Add to selection
option then click on the area that you want to be
included in the selection.
6. (Optional) Click the Refine Edge button in the tool
option bar to activate the Refine Edge dialog box.
Adjust the radius, contrast, smooth, feather, and
contract/expand value to refine the selection. You
may also view the selection on different background
or mask.

 Tolerance – This option is use to adjust the color
range to be included in the selection.
 Contiguous – When this option is selected, only
nearby areas with the same colors to the clicked
pixel will be selected. Otherwise, all areas of the
image with the same colors to the clicked pixel will
be included in the selection.
 Sample All Layers – If this option is selected, the
Magic Wand tool will select colors based on the color
data of all visible layers. Otherwise, it only select
colors based on the color data of the activate layer.
Using the Quick
Selection Tool
1. Select the Quick Selection tool in the tools
palette.
2. Choose selection option in the tool option bar
(New selection, Add to selection, or Subtract
from selection).
3. Set the Brush, Sample All Layers, and Auto-
Enhance options.
4. Paint a selection on the area of the image
that you want to select by clicking and
dragging. Adjust the brush size while making
a selection by clicking the Brush picker on the
tool option bar and setting the desired brush
diameter. Alternatively press the ] or [ key to
increase or decrease the brush size.

5. (Optional) To remove the excess selection, click the
Subtract from selection option in the tool option bar then
click or click and drag on the area that want to be
removed from the selection. If there are areas which is
not covered by the existing selection, select the Add to
selection option then click or click and drag on the area
that you want to be included in the selection.
6. (Optional) Click the Refine Edge button in the tool option
bar to activate the Refine Edge dialog box. Adjust the
radius, contrast, smooth, feather, and contract/expand
value to refine the selection. You may also view the
selection on different background or mask.

 Brush – This option let you select the brush
size (diameter), hardness, and spacing of the
Quick Selection tool brush tip. You can also
increase the brush tip size by pressing the right
bracket (]) and decrease its brush tip size by
pressing the left bracket ([).
 Auto-Enhance – If this option is selected it
reduces the roughness and blockiness in the
selection edges.
