Introduction of Blu-Ray Disc

This document provides an introduction to Blu-ray discs, including their history, name, format, technology, and comparison to DVDs. Blu-ray discs were developed as the next generation optical disc format after CDs and DVDs. They can hold 25 or 50 gigabytes of data using a blue-violet laser with a wavelength of 405 nanometers due to their smaller pit size and track pitch compared to DVDs. Blu-ray discs offer benefits like higher resolution video and audio, more interactive features, and greater durability against scratches and fingerprints.

HCL
THE NAME
Its name derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a
Violet laser.
That read and write data. it's a combination of “BLUE” blue violet
Laser and “RAY "optical ray.
According to BDA it’s not a mistake in spelling of blu-ray character
“e” was intentionally left out so the terms could be registered as
Trade mark.
Correct abbreviation is BD not BDR.

HCL
FORMAT OF BD
There are four types of BD formats.
 BD-ROM(read only): for reading recorded content.
 BD-R(readable): for pc data storage.
 BD-RW(rewritable): for pc data storage
 BD-RE(rewritable): for HDTV(high definition television)recording.

HCL
TYPES OF BD
SINGLE LAYER-: can hold up to 25/27 gb that means 2 hrs or 13 hrs or
about 13 hrs of standard video.
 DOUBLE LAYER-: can hold up to 50gb that means 4.5 hrs or about
20 hrs standard video.

HCL
THE TECHNOLOGY
Pits: Spiral groves that runs from the center of the disc to its edge
Track pitch (of pits) on the surface.
Disc store digitally encoded data in pits, so .
SO,IN BLU-RAY DISC-:
Pits sizes– 0.15 microns (more than twice as small as the pits on
DVD).
Track pitch– 0.03 micron
Laser needed:---BLUE-VIOLET LASER(450nm)
Data transfer rate:-- 36 mbps

FEATURES OF BD
With BD we can--:
Instantly skip to any spot on disc.
Record any program while watching other on the disc.
Record HDTV without any quality loss.
Create play list.
Edit or reorder programs recorded on the disc.
Automatically reach for an empty on the disc to avoid recording
over the program
Can down load subtitle and other extra features.
AND many more…..

HCL
BLU-RAY’S Durability
Various hard coating technologies make BLU-RAY DISC must
durable and family – friendly.
Hard coating technology provides resistances to:
--Finger prints
--Means
--Scratches
--Dust
Much more ROBUST than today’s polycarbonate based (CD/DVD)
and( HP DVDS).

HCL
BLU-RAY DENSITY ADVANTAGE
Higher density enables
better data seek time.
Shorter to travel same
amount of data result in the
faster data seek.
Better for random access of
data.
