Solar Tracker

This document describes a single axis solar tracker. It explains that solar trackers orient solar panels towards the sun using sensors and motors. This increases solar panel output compared to fixed panels. Single axis trackers rotate around one axis, typically north-south, while dual axis trackers move in both axes for maximum output. The document then provides details on the components and working of a basic single axis solar tracking system using an Arduino, two LDR light sensors, resistors, and a servo motor.

WHAT IS A SOLAR TRACKER?
• A Solar tracker is a device used for
orienting a solar photovoltaic
panel or lens towards the sun by
using the solar or light sensors
connected with the machine ( ex:
stepper motor, servomotor, gas
filled piston ).
• Hence, The sun tracking systems
can collect more energy than what
a fixed panel system collects.
NEED OF SOLAR TRACKER

Commercial purpose :
• Increase Solar Panel Output
• Maximum efficiency of the
panel
• Maximize Power per unit Area
• Able to grab the energy through
out the day .
TYPES OF SOLAR TRACKERS

• The suns position in the sky varies both

with the seasons (elevation) and of day
as the sun moves across the sky.
• Hence, there are two types of solar
trackers:
1. Single axis Solar tracker
2. Dual axis Solar tracker
SINGLE AXIS SOLAR TRACKER

• Single axis trackers have one degree

of freedom that acts as an axis of
rotation. The axis of rotation of
single axis trackers is typically
aligned along a true North meridian.
It is possible to align them in any
cardinal direction with advanced
tracking algorithms.
DUAL AXIS SOLAR TRACKER
• Double axis solar trackers have both a
horizontal and a vertical axle and so can track
the Suns apparent motion exactly anywhere in
the world.
• This type of system is used to control
astronomical telescopes, and so there is plenty
of software available to automatically predict
and track the motion of the sun across the sky.
• Dual axis trackers track the sun both East to
West and North to South for added power
output (approx. 40% gain) and convenience.
SYSTEM AND WORKING
• COMPONENTS REQUIRED:
1. Arduino UNO
2. 2 LDR
3. 2 Resistors
4. 1 Servo
• Analog pin A2 and A5 input readings from LDR 1 and LDR 2.
• Servo is connected to Pin 9
• The difference between the readings of LDR 1 and LDR 2 is
computed and feed to Servo through Pin 9 which aligns the
solar panel accordingly.
