Rawal Jaisal, eldest son of the Rawal of Deoraj, was passed over for the throne of Lodhruva in the 12th century. He established a new capital, Jaisalmer, after checking out Trikuta rock and finding it a more secure location. In 1156, Rawal Jaisal founded Jaisalmer fort and named the city after himself. Jaisalmer has since served as the capital of the Bhatti dynasty that ruled the region until the British Raj era in the 19th century.
