ESSENTIAL QUESTION
1. What is a function?
2. How will you represent functions?
3. How to evaluate a function?
Activity 1. LETS INVESTIGATE
A group of student is organizing a World Cusine Festival.
The total cost for the food and other expenses for the
festival is P18,000. The entrance ticket to the festival cost
P350 each. How may tickets must be sold from them to
make a profit of P34,500?
LETS INVESTIGATE
No of 10 15 20 25 30
Ticket
Amount of 3,500 5,250 7,000 8,750 10,500
Sale
The data can be written in the form of ordered pair where the first
component are the value of independent variable (INPUTS) while the
second component are the values of the dependent variable (OUTPUTS)
(10, 3,500), (15, 5,250), (20, 7,000), (25, 8,750), (30, 10,500)
RELATION is any set of ordered pairs.
The first component of the ordered pair is called the
DOMAIN,
while the second component is called the RANGE
(10, 3,500), (15, 5,250), (20, 7,000), (25, 8,750),
(30, 10,500)
EXAMPLE 1
Suppose we have to find the domain and range of the
following relation
1. ((1, 3), (2, 4), (5, 7), (6, 8))
2. ((-2, 4), (-1, 1), (-2, 0), (1, 5), (2, -2)
Domain: 1. Range 1.
2. 2.
FUNCTION – a relation in which each member of the domain
corresponds to exactly one member of the range
CHARACTERISTICS OF A FUNCTION FROM SET A TO SET B
1. Each element of A must be matched with an element of B
2. Two or more element of A may be matched with the same
element of B.
3. An element of A (the Domain) cannot be matched with
two different element of B.
Example.
Determine if the given is a function based on characteristics
of functions
1. ((1, 3), (2, 4), (5, 7), (6, 8), (7, 7)
2. ((-2, 4), (-1, 1), (-2, 0), (1, 5), (2, -2)
Ways of writing a function
Ways of Representing a Function
1.) Verbally – by a sentence that describes how the input
variable is related to the output variable
Ex. Input value x - Election year from 1952 -2016
output value y - elected President of Philippines
2.) Numerically – By table or list of ordered pairs
(2, 34) , (4, 40) , (6, 45) , (8, 50)
Input value x - Age of a male child
output value y - Height of child in inches
Ways of writing a function
3.) Graphically – by points on a graph in a coordinate plane in
which the input values are represented by the horizontal axis
and the output values are represented by the vertical axis.
4.) Algebraically - by an equation in two variables
Ex. F
F – temperature in Fahrenheit
C – Temperature in Celsius
FUNCTION
Example 2. Consider the table of values below. Determine the
input, the function, and the output.
x -2 -1 0 1 2
y -6 -3 0 3 6
Input (Domain) :
Output (Range) :
Function :
Evaluating a function
Finding the value of simply substitute
Example 3.
Example 4. For the function
Evaluate the following a. c.
Evaluating a function
Example 4.
For the function
Evaluate the following a. c.
Solution
a.
b.
c.
KEY POINTS
Relation – any set of ordered pair
Function – a relation in which each member of the domain
corresponds to exactly one member of the range
Ways of Writing a Function – verbally, numerically, graphically
and algebraically
In evaluating a function simply substitute
Summary
1. How do we denote a function?
2. How do we make use of functions in our life?
3. What do we call relationships that are not functions?
