Origin of Clothing

Clothing has evolved over time from animal skins and furs to fabrics and textiles. The earliest humans to make clothing were Neanderthal man between 200,000-30,000 BCE who used animal hides. Fabric creation began in ancient times using flax fibers woven into simple fabrics and dyed with plant extracts. Clothing serves basic human needs of protection, adornment, modesty, and status. It is influenced by social factors like culture and occupation, economic factors like income, and environmental factors like climate.

Clothing: Clothing are the articles worn to cover or protect the body. Modern clothing is made up of
fabrics or textiles but over the period of evolution it has included articles made up of animal skin
and furs, tree barks, grasses and leaves, and bones and shells. It is often also referred as a garment,
apparel, attire, etc.

Scientists are still debating when people started wearing clothes. Experts estimate the first known
humans to make clothing, Neanderthal man, survived from about 200,000 B.C.E. to about 30,000
B.C.E. They learned how to use the thick, furry hides from these animals to keep themselves warm
and dry. With this discovery, clothing was born.

Fabric creation began in ancient times when primitive peoples used

flax fibers, separated into strands and woven into simple fabrics colored
with dyes extracted from plants. The discovery of dyed flax fibres in a
cave in the Republic of Georgia dated to 34,000 BCE suggests textile-like
materials were made even in the Paleolithic era.
Classificatio
CLOTHING IS CLASSIFIED INTO TWO CLASSES:

● The fixed
The modish

n of Clothing The fixed are substantially permanent and are

not subject to fashion changes but vary with each
locality. The modish type predominates in the
western countries and changes rapidly in point of
time over all parts of the world, which are
subject to fashion changes.
Types of
Early
Costumes
The word costume is derived from a Latin word “consuetudo”, which
means a complete set of outer garments. Including, ornaments and
hairstyle.
Prehistoric people clothed their bodies over 75,000 years ago. This has
been shown by the discoveries of ancient cave drawings, statues, and
remains of materials used for making clothing. The first clothes were
made from natural elements: animal skin, fur, grass, leaves, bone, and
shells. Garments were often draped or tied; however, simple needles made
out of animal bone provide evidence of sewn leather and fur garments
from at least 30,000 years ago.
From the beginning, clothing has served the same basic human needs.
Those needs are protection (a physical need), adornment and identification
(psychological needs), and modesty and status (social needs). Costumes
were used not only to cover the body and embellish it they also constitute
a significant non-verbal medium of communication that serves to establish
the cultural identity of a person including a person’s community or country
of origin at any given historical period.
