Wars of the Roses: York vs Lancaster

The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought in England between the House of Lancaster and the House of York for the English throne from 1455 to 1485. The wars were fought over rival claims to the English throne by descendants of King Edward III. The House of Lancaster was defeated by the House of York at the Battle of Towton in 1461. However, the Lancastrians regained power briefly in 1470 before the Yorkists defeated them again at the Battle of Barnet in 1471. The last Lancastrian king, Henry VI, was deposed and the Yorkist King Edward IV took the throne. The wars finally ended when the Yorkist King Richard III was defeated and killed at the Battle

• It was a series of civil wars in England,


between two Plantagenet families: the
Yorks and the Lancasters.
Pre-Requirements

• Failures of Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453)

• Weak rule of Henry VI, due to his crisis of


madness;

• Social and financial troubles after the war.


First phase
(1455 – 1460)

• York supporters defeat King Henry VI at St. Albans (1455);

• Lancasters are defeated at Blore Heath and at Ludford


Bridge (1459); Margaret of Anjou

• In Northampton, the Yorks capture the King (1460);

• Richard of York and his successors are proclaimed as


heirs to the throne (Act of Accord) (1460).

Second Phase
(1460 – 1461)

• At Wakefield Green, the Yorks are defeated and


Richard of York is killed (1460).

Third Phase
(1461-1469)

• His son Edward defeats the Yorks at Mortimer's Cross


(1461);

• The English Parliament crowns Edward IV. Henry VI is


deposed;

Warwick • At Towton, the Lancasters are practically annihilated (1461);

• Warwick, hunted, takes refuge in France and moves on to


the Lancasterside.

Fourth Phase
(1470-1783)

• Warwick manages to resettle Henry VI on the throne


(1470);

• Edward IV defeats the Lancasters at Barnet, killing Warwick


(1471);

• Edward of Lancaster also finds death. Henry VI will die


shortly, Margherita will return to France;

• Edward IV dies in 1483.

Fifth Phase
(1483-1485)

• His brother Richard of Gloucester ascends the throne as


Richard III;
Battle of Bosworth

• Henry Tudor, new leader of the Lancaster faction, defeats


and kills Richard III at Bosworth;

• Henry VII, first Tudor king, marries Elizabeth of York: the


two factions are reconciled.
