novel was absolutely prohibited
Calamba’s Agrarian Problem
Chief Executive- ordered a government
investigation of friars estate to look for
sources of agrarian problem in Calamba
Calamba Hacienda-one of the friar
estates affected; owned by Dominican
Order
Governor-General-ordered Civil
Governor of Laguna Province directing
Municipal government to investigate
agrarian conditions
Finding submitted for appropriate actions:
1. Hacienda of Dominican Order
comprised not only lands around
Calamba but the town of Calamba
2. Profits of Dominican Order continually
increased because of arbitrary increase of
rentals paid by the tenants
3. Hacienda owner never contributed a
single centavo for celebration of town
fiesta, for children education and
agriculture improvement
4. Tenants who had spent much labor in
clearing the lands were dispossessed of
said land for flimsy reason (light and
insubstantial)
5. High rates of interest were arbitrarily
charged the tenants for delayed payments
of rentals and when rentals is not paid,
hacienda management confiscated their
work animals and tools
Rizal leaves Calamba
Advised by Gov.- Gen. Terrero to leave
the Philippines for his own good
September 1887- Rizal wrote to
Blumentritt that he will return to Europe
because his powerful enemies made his
stay endurable
