Microbiology: Morphology of Bacteria

This document is a lecture on the morphology of bacteria presented by Abhishek Agrawal to third semester B.Pharma students. It discusses the size, shapes, and arrangements of bacterial cells. Bacteria are typically 0.5-1 micrometers in size and can be spherical (cocci), rod-shaped (bacilli), curved (vibrios), spiral (spirilla), or corkscrew (spirochetes). Cocci can arrange in pairs (diplococci), chains (streptococci), groups of four (tetracocci), clusters (staphylococci), or cubes (sarcinae) depending on how they divide in one, two

INTRODUCTION
• It is a unicellular, free living, microscopic microorganism
capable of performing all essential functions of life.

• They possess both DNA and RNA.

• They are prokaryotic microorganism.

• They occur in food, soil, water and all natural environment.

• They can survive extremes of temperature, pH, oxygen and

atmospheric pressure.

SIZE OF BACTERIA

• Bacteria are very small microorganism which are visible under the
microscope.

• Most of the bacteria approximately 0.5μm to 1μm.

• High surface area accounts for higher rate of growth and

metabolism of bacteria.

• An electron microscope is used for clear visualization of internal

structure of bacteria.

SHAPE OF BACTERIA
On the basis of shape bacteria are classified as:

• Cocci

• Bacilli

• Vibrios

• Spirilla

• Spirochaetes

SHAPE OF BACTERIA

COCCI

• Cocci are small, spherical or oval cell.

• It is derived from Greek word “Kokkos” means berry.

E.g: staphylococcus, micrococcus, streptococcus

SHAPE OF BACTERIA

Bacilli

• They are straight rod shaped cell.

• It is derived from Greek word “Bacillus” means stick.

• In some of the bacilli the length of the cell may be equal to width.
such bacilli are known as coccobacilli (E.g. Brucella, Brucella
canis)

E.g. Lactobacillus, Hay bacillus, Anthrax bacterium

SHAPE OF BACTERIA

Vibrios

• They are comma shaped curved rods.

• It is a genus of gram negative bacteria

• It’s cause foodborne infection

• E.g. Vibrios fortis, Vibrios gallicus, Vibrious lentus

SHAPE OF BACTERIA

Spirilla

• They have a helical shape.

• They are enlarge rigid cell with several curves or coils.

E.g. Spirillum volutans

SHAPE OF BACTERIA

Spirochaete

• They are slender and spiral form

• They contain double membrane

• They have corkscrew shaped

ARRANGEMENT OF BACTERIAL CELL

Cocci appears as several arrangement or grouping such as:

• Diplococci

• Streptococci

• Tertracocci

• Staphylococci

• Sarcinae

ARRANGEMENT OF BACTERIAL CELL

Diplococci

The cell divide in one plane and remain attached in pairs.

ARRANGEMENT OF BACTERIAL CELL

• Spherical is called to coccus.
• Division along the same plane forms
chain: 2 cocci together- Diplococcus

• 4-22 in chains – Streptococcus

• Division along two different planes-

Tetrads

• Division along 3 planes regularly-

Sarcinae

• Division along 3 planes irregularly-
