Axis and Planes by Dr. Vaishali Jagtap

Axis is a line about which movement takes place. Plane is the surface in which the movement occurs at a right angle to the axis. There are three main anatomical planes: the sagittal plane divides the body into right and left parts, the frontal/coronal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior parts, and the horizontal plane divides the body into superior and inferior segments. The relationship between axes and planes describes different types of movement - for example, abduction and adduction occur in the frontal plane about a sagittal axis.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
 AT END OF LECTURE THE STUDENTS
SHOULD BE ABLE TO KNOW,

-DEFINITION OF AXIS AND PLANE.

-VARIOUS ANATOMICAL PLANES

-RELATION OF AXIS AND PLANES.

Dr Vaishali Jagtap
DEFINITION

 AXIS: Axis is a line about which movement takes

place.

 PLANE : Plane is the surface which lies at right

angle to the axis and in which the
movement takes place.

Dr Vaishali Jagtap
 THE TERMS ARE USED TO DESCRIBE
MOVEMENT OR DIRECTION, AND AS FAR AS
AXES AND PLANES OF JOINT MOVEMENT
ARE CONCERNED, THEY ARE DESCRIBED
WITH THE BODY IN THE ANATOMICAL
POSITION.

ANATOMICAL PLANES
 ANATOMICAL PLANES: ANATOMICAL
PLANES RELATE TO POSITIONS IN SPACE
AND ARE AT THE RIGHT ANGLES TO ONE
ANOTHER.

 SAGITTAL PLANE: VERTICAL PLANE THAT

DIVIDES THE BODY INTO RIGHT AND LEFT
PART.

Dr Vaishali Jagtap
 FRONTAL / CORONAL :VERTICAL PLANE THAT
DIVIDES THE BODY INTO ANTERIOR AND
POSTERIOR PART.

 HORIZONTAL PLANE: HORIZONTAL PLANE

THAT DIVIDES THE BODY INTO SUPERIOR
AND INFERIOR SEGMENTS.
