Spanish American War - Widdows

The Spanish American War began in 1898 after the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor. While the cause was unknown, yellow journalism blamed Spain and rallied support for war. The U.S. declared war on Spain in April 1898. The war lasted just over four months, resulting in American victory and Cuba gaining independence, as well as the U.S. acquiring territories like Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. This established America as a new world power.
