Airport and Railway Engineering: Lecture # 1,2 Syed Hassan Shah

Airport engineering involves the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of facilities for aircraft landing, takeoff, loading/unloading, servicing and storage. Key components include runways for takeoff and landing, taxiways connecting runways to aprons and facilities, hangars for aircraft storage, and a terminal area providing passenger facilities. Railway engineering deals with designing, building and operating rail transport systems, which transfer passengers and goods via wheeled vehicles running on tracks.

Lecture # 1,2
Syed Hassan Shah
Airport Engineering: The planning, design, construction,
and operation and maintenance of facilities providing for the
landing and takeoff, loading and unloading, servicing,
maintenance, and storage of aircraft.
Definitions:

• Airport: a place from which aircraft operate that has paved

runways and maintenance facilities and serves as a terminal.
• Airfield: an area of land for take-off, landing, and
maintenance of aircraft. Like an airport, it must not necessarily
have terminals or paved runways.
• Landing area: Landing area is used for landing and take off
of the aircraft. Runways and taxi ways of the airport are located
in the landing area.
• Runway: a long, level piece of ground with a specially
prepared smooth, hard surface on which aircraft take off and
land
• Taxiway: A taxiway is a path for aircraft at an airport
connecting runways with aprons, hangars, terminals and other
facilities.
• Hangar: A large building for keeping aircrafts.
• Aircraft: General term which include aero plane, helicopter
etc.
• Apron: This is the paved area in front of terminal building (between
landing area and terminal building) for parking of the aircraft, so that
the loading unloading of the passengers, baggage can be done

• Terminal area: It provides space for airline operations, office for

airport management and provide facilities like rest room, restaurant
etc. for passengers.

Railway Engineering: Railway engineering deals with
the design, construction and operation of all types of rail
transport systems.
Rail transport: is a method of transferring passengers and
goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, also known as
tracks.
