LAW OF SINE
It is used to solve triangular problems in which the
given information is AAS, ASA or SSA.

LAW OF SINE
WHAT IS THE FORMULA?
LAW OF SINE
LAW OF SINE sin 55°/ 10 = sin C/ 12
sin^{-1}(12*sin 55/ 10) = C
C = 79.41°
55 + B + 79.41 = 180
B = 45.41°
sin 55°/ 10 = sin 45.41°/b
10 * sin 45.41°/ sin 55° = b
b = 8.694
LAW OF SINE
X° =? , y = ? , z = ?
sin X = sin Y = sin Z
x y z
X + Y + Z = 180
sin X = sin Y
x y
sin X = sin Z
x z
LAW OF SINE
X° =? , y = ? , z = ?
X + 87 + 42 = 180
X = 51 sin X = sin Y = sin Z
x y z
sin 51 = sin 87 X + Y + Z = 180
18.9 y
y = 18.9 * sin 87 = 24.29 sin X = sin Y
sin 51 x y
sin 51 = sin 42 sin X = sin Z
18.9 z x z
z = 18.9 * sin 42 = 16.27
sin 51
LAW OF COSINES
It is used to solve problems in general triangles when two consecutive sides and
angle formed between them are given (SAS) or when all three sides (SSS) of the
triangle are given.

LAW OF COSINES
Find angle A = ?
angle B = ?
angle C = ?
LAW OF COSINES cos (A) = [ b 2 + c 2 - a 2 ] / 2 b c
cos (A) = [ 6 2 + 7 2 - 8 2 ] / 2*6*7
cos (A) = 0.25
A = 75.5°
Find angle A = ?
angle B = ? cos (B) = [ a 2 + c 2 - b 2 ] / 2 a c
angle C = ?
cos (B) = [ 8 2 + 7 2 - 6 2 ] / 2*8*7
cos (B) = 0.6875
B = 46.6
A + B + C = 180
75.5° + 46.6° + C = 180
C = 57.7°
YOUR TURN
A. FIND MISSING PART
1. C = 75°; A = 55°; b = 8
2. B = 50°; b = 10; c = 20
YOUR TURN
B. FIND MISSING PART:
1. a = 275; b = 400; c= 320

C. PROBLEM SOLVING (critical thinking)
1. Two planes, one flying at 430 mph and the other at 320 mph in opposite
directions, left the airport at the same time. Three hours later, they were 1200 miles
apart. What was the measure of the angle between their flight paths?
YOUR TURN
2. An offshore lighthouse is 6km from a coast guard station and 4 km from a hospital
near the shoreline. If the angle formed by light beams to the coast guard station and
the hospital is 145°, what is the distance between the coast guard station and the
hospital?

3. A flagpole is tilted at an angle of 7° from the horizontal and towards the sun
(considering that a pole standing straight makes 90°). It casts a shadow of 14
meter when the angle of elevation of the sun 43°. Find the length of the flagpole.
HOMEWORK: PART 1
1. In triangle VWX: v = 26, W = 15°53'; X = 89°12'
Find V, w, x
2. In triangle BCD: B = 15°30', c = 12; b = 5
Find C, D, d
3. In triangle DEF: d = 96; e = 73; F = 29°
Find f, D, E
4. In triangle MNO: m = 61; n = 25; o = 78
Find M, N, O note: capital letter = angle
Small caps = side
HOMEWORK: PART 2
1. A flagpole casts a shadow of 43 ft long when the angle of elevation of the sun is
59°. The pole leans 12° from the vertical away from the sun. Find the length of the
flagpole.
2. Three towns, JOY, LOVE and HOPE, are joined by straight roads. The distance
from JOY and LOVE is 16km; from LOVE to HOPE is 8km; and from HOPE to
JOY is 15 km. Find the angle of the roads that meet at LOVE.
3. Two angles of a triangle are 108°15' and 51°1'. The side opposite the smaller angle
is 12 meters. Find the length of the side opposite 51°1'.
