Introduction
In this investigation, we explored the relationship between kinetic and potential energy as we tried to make an
action figure jump higher by changing different variables such as mass, and the fulcrum point of our
teeterboard. We used a wooden ruler, and a Lincoln log for the design of our teeterboard. We examined the
effects of height and mass on the total height the minion jumped.
Method
Data was collected on the height at which the playdoh was dropped, the point/distance of the fulcrum and how
high the action figure jumped. We measured the mass of the playdoh, in grams, the point of the fulcrum in
centimeters and the action figures height in cm. We collected the height at which the playdoh was dropped to
determine the effect of height jumping distance of the action figure. The data was analyzed by looking at the
relationship between total height of the playdoh and total height of the action figure jumped. The mass of the
playdoh was a constant at 43g. A second set of data was taken with the playdoh mass of 70.1g.
Argument
The results of our analysis show a positive relationship between height at which playdoh was dropped and total
height action figure jumped. When the playdoh was dropped at greater height, the action figure jumped higher.
Argument (continued)
Also as the mass of the playdoh was increased, there was a positive relationship.
The evidence shows that energy is transformed from one form to another. As the height
of the drop increased so did the height of the action figure. The increased potential
energy was transferred into kinetic energy of the action figure. As shown in its increased
jump height.
