AT 17701 - Engine& Vehicle Management System: Session 37

This document summarizes sessions on engine and vehicle management system fault diagnosis. It recaps actuator diagnostics for different components like rotary idle speed control valves and solenoid actuators. It also shows examples of current waveforms for fuel injectors and explains using starter motor current to evaluate engine compression. Finally, it discusses using alternator ripple voltage to assess alternator condition.

Relative compression petrol

 Measuring the current drawn by the starter motor is useful to determine starter condition
but it is also useful as an indicator of engine condition.
 The purpose of this particular waveform is therefore to measure the current required to
crank the engine and to evaluate the relative compressions.
 The current for a typical four cylinder petrol/ gasoline engine is in the region of 100–200
A.

Alternator waveform

 Checking the ripple voltage produced by an alternator is a very good way of assessing its
condition.
