Family Member Influence to Rizal
• FRANCISCO MERCADO-Father of José Rizal who was the youngest of Juan and
Cirila Mercado. Born in Biñan, Laguna on April 18, 1818.He studied Latin and
Philosophy at the San José College in Manila. After his parents death he moved
to Calamba and became a tenant-farmer of the Dominican-owned hacienda.
He was a hardy and independent man, a hardworking man of few words.

• TEODORA ALONSO-Dr. Rizal’s mother was born in Manila on November 8, 1826


as the second child of Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos. She went to
school at the College of Santa Rosa. She was a remarkable woman, she
possessed refined culture, literary talent, business ability and the fortitude of
Spartan women.
• SATURNINA MERCADO- Is the eldest child of Don Francisco and Teodora
Alonso. She and her mother provided the little Jose with good basic
education that by the age of three, Pepe already knew his alphabet.

• PACIANO MERCADO-Is the is the only brother of Dr. Jose Rizal. When he
was a student at the College of San Jose, Paciano had used “Mercado”
as his last name. But because he had gained notoriety with his links to
Father Burgos of the ‘Gomburza,’ he suggested that Jose use the
surname ‘Rizal’ for his own safety.

• NARCISA MERCADO- Was the third eldest sibling of Jose Rizal. She was
a teacher and a musician by profession. It was Narcisa who looked for
and found the unmarked grave of Dr. Jose Rizal at the Paco cemetery
after his martyrdom.
• OLYMPIA MERCADO- Ypia was her pet name. Married Silvestre Ubaldo, a
telegraph operator from Manila; she died in 1887 from child birth.
• LUCIA MERCADO- Married Mariano Herbosa of Calamba. He was the
nephew of Father Casanas. Herbosa died of cholera in 1889 and was
denied a Christianburial because Dr. Rizal was his brother-in-law.
• MARIA MERCADO- Is the sixth child in the family. It was to her whom Jose
talked about wanting to marry Josephine Bracken when the majority of
the Rizal family was apparently not amenable to the idea. Jose had also
brought up to Maria his plan of establishing a Filipino colony in North
British Borneo.
• JOSE RIZAL- The second son and the seventh child. The greatest Filipino
hero and a tremendous genius. His nickbname was Pepe. During his excile
in Dapitan he lived together with Josephine Bracken, an Irisch girl from
Hong-Kong. They had a son with her but their baby son died a few hours
after birth. Rizal named him Francisco after his father and buried him in
Dapitan.
• CONCEPCION MERCADO- Also known as Concha, was the eight child of theRizals,
who died at the age of three.

• JOSEFA MERCADO- Was the ninth child and affectionately called Panggoy.She
remained a spinster throughout her life.

• TRINIDAD MERCADO- Was the tenth child who, like Josefa, died without ahusband.

• SOLDAD MERCADO- Was the youngest of the brood who later married Pantaleon
Quintero, a native of Calamba.

• DOMINGO LAM-CO- Rizal’s great-great grandfatheron hisfather sidewas Domingo


Lameo(Domingo Lam-co) a Chinese immigrant from the Fukien city ofChinchew.
