PATTACHITRA
A SPECTACULAR ART FORM FROM ODISHA
Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit
words patta, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning
picture
For generations, the inhabitants of
Raghurajpur village are narrating mythological
stories through their world famous paintings-
pattachitra and palm-leaf engraving
An ancient form of painting made on
‘treated’ piece of cotton cloth using
natural colours
Paintings on cloths are pattachitras
and the carvings on palm leaf are
pothi chitras
The traditions of Pattachitra paintings are more than
thousand years, introduced in 5BC in a Raghurajpur, a
village in Puri District
Based on Hindu mythology and specially
inspired by Jagannath and Vaishnava sect
Painting on cloth ‘Patta Chitra', paintings on walls or
‘Bhitti Chitra' and palm leaf engravings or ‘Tala Patra
Chitra' or ‘Pothi Chitra’
In a family, the female members prepare the glue,
the canvas and apply colors, and give the final
lacquer coating
The chitrakara then draws the initial line
and gives the final finishing
The canvas is prepared by coating the clothing with a
mixture of chalk and gum made from tamarind seeds
Rubbed by taking the help of two different
stones and then the cloth is dried
The painters do not use pencil or charcoal
for the preliminary drawings
The final lines are drawn and the patta is given a lacquer
coating to protect it from weather, thus making the
painting glossy
The painting is held over a fireplace so that
the back of the painting is exposed to heat
White color is made Red color is made Black color is made
out of powdered out of hingula out of kajal
conch shells
Yellow color is made Blue color is made
out of harilata out of indigo
