Chapter 1 - Introduction

This document provides an overview of business research and different types of research methods. It discusses qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research focuses on understanding social phenomena in their natural setting through in-depth interviews and observations. Quantitative research uses statistical and numerical analysis of data collected through surveys and questionnaires to generalize findings across large groups. The document outlines the typical structure of quantitative research, including literature review, research design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting findings and conclusions. It describes each phase and key steps such as developing research questions, sampling, survey design, data coding, and interpretation.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION OF BUSINESS
RESEARCH

Dr. Selim Ahmed

Head, World School of Business
World University of Bangladesh
What is Research?
Research is a systematic investigation into and
study of materials and sources in order to
establish facts and reach new conclusions.
Types of Research
 Qualitative Research

 Quantitative Research
What is Qualitative Research?
 Qualitative research is a process of naturalistic
inquiry that seeks in-depth understanding of social
phenomena within their natural setting. It focuses
on the "why" rather than the "what" of social
phenomena and relies on the direct experiences of
human beings as meaning-making agents in their
every day lives.

Limitations of Qualitative
Research
  The quality of the data gathered in qualitative
research is highly subjective.
 Mining data gathered by qualitative research can be
time consuming.
 Qualitative research creates findings that are
valuable, but difficult to present.
 Researcher influence can have a negative effect on
the collected data.
 Qualitative research is not statistically representative.
What is Quantitative Research?
 Quantitative research methods emphasize objective
measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or
numerical analysis of data collected through polls,
questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating
pre-existing statistical data using computational
techniques. Quantitative research focuses on
gathering numerical data and generalizing it across
groups of people or to explain a particular
phenomenon.
