Cleaning Principles and Procedures

OBJECTIVES.
 At the end of this session students will be able to

 State the definition of cleaning.

 Explain general principles of cleaning.

 Describe different types of cleaning.

 Identify different methods of cleaning with advantage and


disadvantage of each.

Definition Of Cleaning

Cleaning may be defined as removal of


dust, dirt, foreign matter, tarnish and stains
from various surfaces with aid of cleaning agents and
equipments.

 Dust :Dust is found floating in the air and on all surfaces that
are exposed to the environment.It contains ash, hair, dead skin
cells,pollen,sand dry earth etc.

 Dirt: Dust when comes in contact with either water,grease


results in dirt.

 Grit :-Grit is heavier particles of sand pebbles.

 Stain :-Stain is a discolouration of any surface caused
by chemicals,food stuffs,dyes etc

 Tarnish:-Tranish is a discolouration of metals when


they come in contact with water, air,food stuffs.It
results in chemical reaction between metal and
environment.

General Principles of Cleaning
 Remove all the surface soil and obstructions before
cleaning.
 Follow the least obstructive and disturbing method of

cleaning.
 Restore all the surfaces as soon as possible after the

cleaning .
 The simplest method should be tried first ,using the

mildest cleaning agent.


 Be aware of possible safety hazard

 Remove dust and dirt without transferring them to
other surface/areas.

 The cleaner should start cleaning from the farthest end


of an area working towards exit.

 After the cleaning process is over all the equipments


should be washed as applicable ,dried and stored
properly.
 Cleaning should done from top to bottom.
