Bella Shin
Overview of the school
: University of Victoria
 Uvic is one of Canada’s leading research-intensive universities. They are widely recognized for
leadership in research, inspired teaching and community engagement. They provide innovative
undergraduate and graduate programs and dynamic learning experiences in their diverse and
welcoming West Coast setting.
 History & Traditions
: The university received degree-granting status in 1963. The origins of Uvic, however, can be traced
back to 1903 and the establishment of Victoria College, their predecessor institution.

The three martlets – The university mottoes,

footless heraldic birds – on shown on the Uvic Coat of
the Uvic shield refer to Arms, are ‘Let there be light’
those on the crest of McGill (in Hebrew) and ‘A multitude
University, with which of the wise is the health of
Victoria College was the world’ (in Latin).
originally affiliated.
Why Uvic would be a great fit for me?
① University Ranking
Macleans has ranked Uvic the third best comprehensive
school and the sixteenth best reputation, and the mixing of
three major ranking platforms found Uvic to be the fourteenth
overall top school in the country.
② The Size
With only about 20,000 students. It makes for easier
networking, smaller classes, and a really tight community.
③ The Campus
Uvic’s campus is absolutely beautiful! It’s small enough to
walk from one end to the others in only ten minutes, and it’s
full of trees, gardens, and lovely architecture. It’s only a
fifteen minute walk from a beach, and is close enough to the
downtown area without being too busy.
