INTRODUCTION:
• MMHPS project was completed on 14 December 2008 and
generation started one month later
• MMHPS has been generating electricity by diverting water of
Marsyangdi river.
• It is located near Besisahar in the lamjung district about 170km
west of kathmandu.
• The damsite is 35km and the powerhouse site is 27km from dumre
to the north.
• It is a daily pondage run off river hydropower with daily peaking
capacity of 5hrs at minimum discharge.
• MMHPS has an installed capacity of 70MW and designed annually
generation of 398GWHr.
Geographical location of MMHPS
2.SPILLWAY
 Capacity=4270m3/s
 There is two types of gate:(i)Radial gate
(ii)Flap gate
3.INTAKE
 3 intake
 Submerged tunnel intake with trash rack and
gate
 Height=19.54m ,Width=12m
4.Desander:
 Desander is underground in caverns
 Length=130m,Height=27m,Width=15m
 6 basins are accommodate in 3 caverns i.e. 2 basins in each
intake.
• 5.Surge tank:
 It is vertical ,circular surge tank, underground.
 It is concrete lined with throttle
 Height=45m,Diameter=20m
• 6.PENSTOCK
 It is a concrete castes steel pipe
 Length=212-218m
 It is located between discharge measurement chamber and
turbine inlet valve.
Components of powerhouse
1.Valves:
 Two types of valve:(i)Butterfly valve (ii)Bypass valve
 Butterfly valve are used for controlling the flow of water to
the turbine
 Bypass valve are used for maintaining the pressure
2.Turbine:
 2 unit of Francis turbine , vertical shaft
 Rated output=37.928MW
 Rated speed=333.33rpm ,
 Gross head=110m
 24 unit of guide veins are used to allow required quantity of
water to turbine
3.Governor
 Electronic governor
 Used to regulate the mean speed of engine

4.Generator
 2 unit of 3 phase synchronous generator
 Rated output=39MVA
 Power factor=0.85-0.9
 Rated voltage=11kv±7.5%
 Rated speed=333rpm,18pole
5.Excitation system
 Static excitation system
 Consist of automatic voltage regulator(AVR), exciter ,
measuring elements, power system stabilizer and limitation
and protection unit
 Exciter is controlled by the AVR and is required to provide
field current to the rotor of synchronous generator
 It consist of thyristor or transistor bridge, and transformer
6.Synchronous system
 Process of matching speed and frequency of generator to
the running network
 Synchronization relay are used
7. Transformer
 6 single-phase power transformer of rating 14.5MVA
 1-three phase transformer is used for local of rating
25MVA
 Forced oil type transformer
 Buchholz relay protects transformer
8.Switch yard
 An enclosed area of power system containing the switch
gear
 Open air type
 Area=43m*50m
9.Circuit breaker
 SF6 is used
 Rated voltage=145KV
 Rated normal current=3150A
 Rated lighting withstand voltage=650KV
 Rated breaking current=10KA
10.Transmission line:
 Cardinal conductor of capacity 960A
 Double line transmission: 132KV lines from upper
marsyangdi connected to the grid and later 1 line runs to
Kathmandu and another to Bharatpur

11.Potential transformer
 Primary voltage= 132000/√3V
 Secondary voltage=110/√3V
 Rated VA=50VA
12. Auxiliary system
 It includes Diesel generator , dc batteries
 Supplies excitation incase of primary excitation power
failure
 Provides a voltage of 110V until the fault has been cleared
