BED MAKING
The act of arranging the bed sheets and
other beddings to prepare it for use.
Helps to ensure the client's comfort and
sense of well-being.
Occupied bed is a type of bed where a client
is lying on the bed. It is usually done after
giving a bed bath, while unoccupied bed, is a
type of bed where the client is out of the bed

NEEDED
GLOVES- act as a protective barrier to
prevent the possible transmission of
diseases between healthcare professionals
and patients
Mattress Pad- provide additional comfort to
the mattress top.

piece of heavier material
that rests directly on top
of your bed sheets or on
directly on top of the
mattress itself
TOP SHEET A piece of linen, much like the
fitted sheet but lies between yourself and
your blanket

Wash your hands. Put on gloves
Check the bed if it is locked. Raise the
adjustable bed to high position; lower bed rails.

Gather the necessary linens to be used.

REMOVING THE LINENS
Removed the old linens
Soiled/clean linens
When removing old linens, fold it away from
your uniform and be careful not to shake the
linens
Remove gloves and washed hands

Used a clean pair of gloves
Place the mattress pad on the top of the bed
Place the bottom sheet on the center of the
bed, spread the sheet over the mattress. If
not fitted make mitered corners

Place the top sheet, and cover the top sheet
with blanket. Allow about 18” for turnover

STEP 1. Tell the patient what you’re
about to do.

STEP 1 Cross the patient’s arms and legs in
preparation for turning
STEP 2 Loosen the bed sheet to be
changed
STEP 3 Supporting the patient’s head,
move the pillow to the other half of the
bed, then turn the patient to lie on this
side of the pillow.

STEP 4 Roll the dirty sheet to the center of
the bed up to the patient’s back.
STEP 5 Place the clean sheet half-rolled
lengthwise against the rolled dirty sheets.
STEP 7 Turn the patient to the other side
over the two rolls of linen. Support the
head of the patient and move the pillow
over

STEP 8 Go to the other side of the bed and
pull out the remaining half of the soiled
linen. Unroll the other half of the clean
sheet
STEP 9 Tuck the side of the bed and miter
the corner
STEP 10 Turn the patient onto his back
STEP 11 Change the pillowcase
