Implementation of Five Level Charging Scheme in Lithium Ion Batteries For Enabling Fast Charging in Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

The document proposes implementing a five-level charging scheme for lithium-ion batteries in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to enable fast charging. It involves designing a charging system with a charger, battery, PWM, and charging circuit to apply different constant current levels during charging. A Simulink model will be developed and MATLAB will be used to simulate the five-level charging scheme and analyze if the battery can be fully charged in under two hours.

IMPLEMENTATION OF FIVE LEVEL CHARGING

SCHEME IN LITHIUM ION BATTERIES FOR ENABLING

FAST CHARGING IN PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC
VEHICLES
Objective
• To implement fast charging in Li-ion batteries for getting full charge
Introduction
• Apart from the potential to reduce emissions and reliance on
petroleum, large-scale adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) presents an
opportunity to provide electric energy storage (EES)-based ancillary
services
• e.g., smoothing intermittency due to renewable energy sources (RESs)
and supporting grid-wide frequency stability
EV
• A plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) is any motor vehicle that can be
recharged from an external source of electricity, such as wall sockets,
and the electricity stored in the rechargeable battery packs drives or
contributes to drive the wheels
Li-ion battery
• Li-ion battery is commonly used in HEVs as well as Evs due to its
several advantages over its counterparts (fuel cell, ultra-capacitors, Pb-
acid, Ni-Cd, Ni-MH).
• Li-ion batteries have more specific energy, energy density, less
charging time, etc compared to other batteries
Existing system
• Constant Voltage Charging Scheme
• Constant Current Charging Scheme
• Constant Current Constant Voltage charging
• Five Level Current Charging Scheme:
Drawback
• Battery does not get fully charged and time required for charging is
more than 2 hours
• Maintaining low charge current leads to more charging time.
Proposed method
• The present work focuses on implementation of the five-level charging
scheme for Li-ion battery.
• A charging system is proposed to implement the charging scheme.
