• Changes associated with normal aging increase nutritional risk for
older adults. Aging is characterized by diminished organ system
reserves and weakened homeostatic controls.
• Nutritional needs of the older individual are determined by
multiple factors, including specific health problems and related
organ system compromise; an individual's level of activity, energy
expenditure, and caloric requirements; the ability to access,
prepare, ingest, and digest food; and personal food preferences
• Data from studies of acute hospitalization in older patients
suggest that up to 71 percent are at nutritional risk or are
malnourished [1]. Malnutrition is associated with increased
mortality risk

• Nutritional problems in the elderly can cause a number of
complications, including weakened immune systems, lowered energy
levels and chronic health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high
blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis. Making
changes in their diet to match the changes in elders' changing caloric,
energy, taste and access needs helps prevent malnutrition, which
often goes undiagnosed.

• The elderly should eat foods rich in B12, magnesium and vitamins
A, C and D. They should focus on high-fiber foods, leafy green
vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or nonfat milk and milk
products. Rather than adding salt, the elderly should eat foods
seasoned with herbs and olive oil. To satisfy sweet cravings, they
should munch on foods that are naturally sweet, such as fruits,
and cook with sweet peppers. To prevent dehydration, the elderly
should drink small amounts of fluids throughout the day,
consuming at least 1.7 liters of fluid every 24 hours

• Geriatric population mostly have low sources of income. Following are


some tips to fix the income
 ELIMINATE HOME MAINTENANCE COSTS:
• A seniors money might be spent renting a house then trying to maintain
their homes they ownif something happens,like the air conditioning
breaks or the roof leaks
• , the landlord would be responsible for fixing them
• A one bedroom apartment would be more than enough for a senior
• There is no costs to you for a realtor to find an affordable rental to live in
• You can also utilize sites like CARE.COM
GET RID OF THE CAR
• For seniors living in the city,there is no reason to insist on holding
on their cars
• Public transportation system and ride share app like UBER or
LYFT can serve them
• Situation in rural area might bhi difficult
• For cityu dwellers the cost of maintaining a car can easily be at
least $300 per month
• Taking these things into consideration it might be best to get rid of
car
EAT HEALTHIER FOOD
• It may seem difficult to find healthy food alternative when living
on a limited budget,but it is possible with the right planning each
month
• Foods like oatmel and farina for breakfast is a cost effective and
nutritious way to start a day
• Quinoa is a great food to help you get a lot of nutrtion for a small
price tag
• Try growing your own herbs and vegitables with a small home
garden for extra savings
CUT OUT UNNECESSARY SPENDING
• This often goes without saying but it is good to go over once more
• Take out expense that you simply do not need to have anymore
• You may want to look into bundling your cable and internet
services or even getting rid of you land line
Limited And Healthy Food Choices in older adults
• Let us look at foods that are good for elderly people. Begin with the
basics. By this, I mean have a balanced meal, or elderly nutrition
program, which constitutes:
Carbohydrate-rich foods like sweet potatoes and brown rice
Protein-rich foods like salmon and beans
Fruits and vegetables (five portions a day)
• Besides this, you can prepare meals rich in the following nutrients:
Foods High In Omega-3 Fatty Acids
• These fatty acids are important for people of all ages including elderly
people as they help prevent inflammation which can cause cancer,
rheumatoid, arthritis, and heart disease.
Foods Rich in Calcium
• Calcium helps our bodies build and maintain healthy bones. It
has also been known to lower blood pressure. Unfortunately,
surveys have shown that as we grow older we consume less
calcium.
Foods Rich in Fiber
• Foods rich in fiber promote proper digestion by moving food
through the digestive tract. These foods have also been known
to reduce the risk of heart disease.
• Foods rich in fiber include nuts, wholegrain cereal, wholegrain
bread and pasta, brown rice, brown bread, fruits, and
vegetables.
Water
• Dehydration causes drowsiness and confusion among other side effects so it is essential to
stay hydrated. If you are taking the recommended high fiber diet, you need to drink a lot of
water this is because fiber absorbs plenty of water.
• In order not to get overwhelmed by the quantity, you can put the water in small bottles and
drink it throughout the day as opposed to storing it in a big container.
• The surest way to check for dehydration is to observe your urine. If it is light and
transparent, that means you are hydrated, if it is dark or bright yellow and cloudy that is a
sign of dehydration.
Foods Rich in Iron
• Iron plays a vital role in the body. It produces hemoglobin which carries oxygen in the blood
from the lungs to the rest of the body.
Foods Rich in Vitamin C
• Vitamin C has antioxidant properties which are believed to prevent cancer and heart disease
Vitamin D
• Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium in the body slowing down the rate at which
bones lose calcium. It aids in the maintenance of bone density; therefore, preventing
osteoporosis.
 Foods Rich in Vitamin B12
• Vitamin B12 is responsible for maintaining nerve function, production of red
blood cells, and DNA. It is found in dairy products like milk and meat and
poultry products.
 Foods Rich in Potassium
• Potassium aids in cell function reduces blood pressure and lowers your
chances of kidney stones. It is also believed to strengthen bones.
• It is found in fruit and vegetables like bananas, prunes, and potatoes. While
lack of potassium is a problem, too much of it is dangerous, so consult your
doctor before getting started on supplements.
 Magnesium
• It keeps your heart healthy, your immune system, and your bones strong. As
you grow older, your body’s ability to absorb magnesium decreases.
• Some medication for older people decreases the absorption of magnesium. It
is mainly found in whole grains, nuts, fresh fruit, and vegetables.
