Independent Project (Engineering) : Induction Motor Protection From Phase and Overheating Using Atmega Microcontroller

This document describes an independent engineering project to protect an induction motor from phase loss and overheating using an Atmega microcontroller. The protection system detects single phasing faults and overheating via a temperature sensor. When a fault is detected, the microcontroller cuts power to the motor by opening a relay. The system aims to ensure safe and reliable operation of induction motors.

Induction Motor Protection from

Phase and Overheating Using
Atmega Microcontroller
INTRODUCTION
 Induction motor is the most widely used motor
for both domestic and industrial purposes
 Due to their excessive usage these motors
often get faulty.
 They are one of the most reliable motors as
well available in the market.
 So in order to ensure pretty smooth and
desired running it is very important to devise a
protection system which ensures its normal
operation.
Features
 Single Phasing Protection

 Overheating Protection
Single Phasing Issue
 If the condition of single phasing arises during the running of
motor, the winding of motor gets heated due to the negative
sequence current in the faulted phase.
 Two phases of three phase induction motor will get power
supply in single phasing condition and they produce negative
sequence current in the faulted phase.
Overheating in Motor
 Overloading of the three phase induction motor
can produce hot spot within the winding, which
may exceed the thermal limits of motor.
 Induction motor has a relatively large heat
storage capacity, so a short period overload
cannot damage the motor windings because a
large part of heat is stored in the core.
 In the case of locked rotor condition the current
rises very rapidly, the winding insulation
thermal level may reach to its limit within
seconds.
Protection System Block Diagram
Protection System
 In a scenario of fault occurrence of single
phasing the motor will be detached from
the three phase supply and the two phases
are connected with the three phase rectifier.
 The two phases will be rectified once they

are connected across the three phase

rectifier.
 So in this way the three phases supplied to

the induction motor are coming actually

from two phases.
Protection System Cont.
 For overheating problem we have utilized temperature
sensor LM35 which can be shown in block diagram.
 LM35 is a temperature sensor that yields a simple sign
which is corresponding to the prompt temperature.
 Because of over-burden on enlistment engine the
encompassing temperature of the engine transcends
admissible level the warmth sensorLM35 sense the
rising temperature and gives the sign to the miniature
regulator which is associated with exchanging port at
the right. This gives stumbling sign to the transfer.
Micro Controller
 Atmega32 Microcontroller has some good features as
required for our project.
 It has 8 ADC inputs which can be used for our
required 6 analog inputs.
 There are two more ADC input left which can be used
for further analog inputs.
 Inbuilt frequency of this microcontroller is 1 MHz and
can be upgraded up to 16 MHz by using crystal
oscillator.
 We can use 24 pins as output and 8 pins as ADC
input. 8 pins are used for LCD display. 1 Pin is used
controlling the relays.
Conclusion
 The project is based on the protection of
three phase induction motor under single
phasing condition and it is implemented using
microcontroller.
 The protection system can protect three phase
induction motor from under voltage, over
voltage, over current and unbalance voltages.
 Future scope the dissertation is to implement
the inverter system on the large capacity three
phase induction motors.
