What is a device driver?
• Enable interaction between the operating system
and hardware devices:
• Hardware-dependent, operating system-dependent
• 32-bit drivers do not work with 64-bit Windows 10 and
vice versa
• Device drivers that ship with Windows 10 have a
Microsoft digital signature
• The driver store is the driver repository
• You install devices in two stages:
• Staging. Adding driver packages to the store
• Installation. From store, when PnP detects device

• Printing device:
• Physical device that creates print job output

• Printer port:
• Port through which printing device is connected
• Printer:
• Windows 10 representation of printing device
• Print Driver:
• Used for communicating with printing device and
processing print jobs
What are Type 4 printer drivers?
Benefits of Type 4 printer drivers:
• A single Type 4 driver can support
multiple devices
• Driver files are isolated,
preventing file-naming
conflicts
• Clients download drivers
from Windows Update
• Driver packages are smaller
and install faster
• Can deploy print driver and
printer user interface
independently
Managing client-side printing
Typical client-side printing
tasks that you can manage:
• Modifying printer properties
• Selecting default printer
• Viewing and managing the print
queue
• Pausing or resuming printer
• Pausing, resuming, restarting, or
canceling print job
• Reordering print jobs in a print
queue
Managing print server properties
Print Management manages print servers:
• Add and delete printers, and add and manage drivers
• Manage print queues, and modify printer status
• Create custom filters
