Lesson 3 RIZAL As A Symbol 3

Rizal can be viewed as a symbol with different meanings to different groups. He became a symbol of nationalism and resistance to Spanish colonial rule after his execution. Various religious organizations in the Philippines came to venerate Rizal as a "Tagalog Christ" in 1907, giving him a religious symbolic meaning. Texts about Rizal can be interpreted as both signs that directly represent ideas, and as symbols that represent ideas or qualities through association, interpretation, or cultural convention.
