PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

The present perfect expresses the idea that something


happened (or never happened) before now, at an unspecific time
in the past .The exact time it happened is not important.

For examples:

They have moved into a new apartment .

I have already seen that movie.

We have never seen the snow.


For examples:
1. I have written my wife a letter every other day for the last
two weeks.
2. I have met many people since I came here in June.
3. I have flown on an airplane many times.
Examples:
1. We have lived here since 2001.

2. She has known me for more than two years.

3. I haven't seen her since Christmas.

4. How long have they been here?


1. We have always worked in York. (We still work in York.)
2. It has been quite cold lately. (It is still cold.)

If the activity started in the past and ended in the past we


cannot use the present perfect.

1. I have smoked for 5 years. (present perfect - I still smoke.)


2. I smoked for 5 years. (past simple - I smoked from 2000 to
2005, then I stopped.)
