GERUNDS _ RECAP

I. Gerunds are verbal nouns- that is words derived from verbs


but functioning as nouns.
II. Gerunds are formed from verbs with –ing added at the end.
III. They have the same form as present participles but they do
not have the same functions.

I. Boxing is his profession. (Subject)


II. The girls learn dancing. (object of a verb)
III. He coached them in swimming. ( object of
preposition)
IV. A gerund may also be a compound word consisting
of a noun.
• Horse-racing, Scuba-diving

PHRASES

• V. When referring to the PAST ACTION, a


PERFECT GERUND may be used . The perfect
gerund consists of HAVING followed by past
participle of the verb.

I. We remember having seen them


together once.

VI. In the PASSIVE FORM a gerund consist of


being followed by the PAST PARTICIPLE OF
THE VERB.
• And a PERFECT GERUND consists of having
been followed by the past participle of the verb
EXAMPLES

• She rejoiced (glad) at passing her examination.


(Gerund)
• She was angry at being outwitted. (Gerund phrase)
• He denied having stolen the money. (perfect gerund)
• He complained about not having been given adequate
warning.
• (perfect gerund in the passive form)
