Design Base Shear (NSCP 1992)

This document discusses the seismic analysis of buildings according to the National Structural Code of the Philippines. It outlines the process for determining the design base shear, including defining the seismic zone factor, importance factor, numerical coefficient, fundamental period of vibration, total seismic deadload, and structural system reduction factor. The seismic zones in the Philippines are divided into Zone 2 and Zone 4. Parameters like site coefficient, structure height and type are used to calculate the fundamental period of vibration.

 Seismic Zone
The Philippine archipelago is divided into two
seismic zones only. Zone 2 covers the provinces
of Palawan (except Busuanga), Sulu and Tawi-
tawi while the rest of the country in under Zone 4
as shown in Figure 208-1. Each structure shall be
assigned a seismic zone factor Z, in accordance
with Table 208-3

T = Fundamental period of vibration in seconds

Fundamental period of vibration in seconds, of the
structure for the direction under consideration
determined in accordance with Sec. 2.2.5.2.2
Sec. 2.2.5.2.2 Structure Period. The Value of T shall
be determined from the following methods.
Method A : For all buildings the value of T may be
approximated from the following formula
T= Ct (hn)3/4
where
Ct = 0.085 for steel moment-resisting frames
Ct = 0.075 for reinforced concrete moment-
resisting frames and eccentrically braced
frames
Ct = 0.05 for all other buildings
hn = Height, in m, above the base level n

Method B : The fundamental period T may be calculated
using the structural properties and deformational
chareacteristics the resisting elements in properly
subtantiated analysis.

This requirement may be satisfied by using the following
