Consistency of Systems

This document discusses determining the consistency of systems of linear equations and the number of solutions. It provides the following key points: 1) A consistent system has at least one solution, while an inconsistent system has no solutions. A consistent system can have a unique solution, meaning it is independent, or an infinite number of solutions, meaning it is dependent. 2) The consistency of a system and number of solutions can be determined by calculating the determinant or row reducing the augmented matrix. If the determinant is non-zero, the system is consistent with a unique solution. If any row of the row-reduced augmented matrix is all zeros, the system has infinite solutions. 3) The examples show how to apply these

Consistency of

Systems
A system of two linear equations can have one
solution, an infinite number of solutions, or no
solution. Systems of equations can be classified by
the number of solutions.
If a system has at least one solution, it is said to be consistent .

If a consistent system has exactly one solution, it is independent .

If a consistent system has an infinite number of solutions, it is dependent .

If a system has no solution, it is said to be inconsistent .

Determining the Consistency of a System of
Equations

● Using the Determinant.

● Using the Augmented Matrix

Using the Determinant

If the the system is consistent and has a unique solution

If the row reduce the augmented matrix.

If any row consists entirely of zeroes, the system is

consistent and has an infinite number of solutions.

Otherwise the system is inconsistent and has no

solutions.
Using only Augmented Matrix

If all elements of the diagonal of the triangular matrix are non-zero, the
system is consistent and has a unique solution

If row 2 or row 3 have all zeroes in the triangular matrix but a

non-zero number in the augmented section then the system is
inconsistent and has no solutions (A)

If any row consists entirely of zeroes, the system is

consistent and has an infinite number of solutions
