• Environmental issues and recycling

2
FUNDAMENTALS OF CLEANING:
Cleaning helps to prevent potential contamination of equipment, parts
and other surfaces. It keeps the things safe and sanitized.

Quick and effective cleaning is the need of the hour for rapid industrial
development and for creating an echo-friendly atmosphere. This is
mainly influenced by the process of automation and the selection of
cleaning chemicals/methods.

3
CLEANING CHEMICALS:
They play vital role in modern industrial cleaning to be done in a more
scientific way. Chemical cleaning products can cut down the hard physical
work of scrubbing and polishing.

Chemicals used for cleaning commercial and industrial purposes are usually
sold in bulk containers. These are usually more effective and more
economical than products designed for domestic use. They are also often
more concentrated, so it is important to use them safely.

4
CHOOSING THE RIGHT
CLEANING AGENT:
Detergents are synthetically manufactured cleaning products that
remove visible soiling from a surface. They work by wetting the surface,
breaking up grease and loosening the soil, then holding the soil in the
water to get it washed away easily. Detergents do not kill bacteria.

5
Classification of Detergents according to
their pH (acidity or alkalinity):

Neutral detergents (pH 7–9): these are used for light to moderate
cleaning tasks. Neutral detergents foam well in water and are safe to
use on most surfaces. They are generally used for floors, walls,
benches, sinks, eating and drinking utensils, food preparation equipment
and refrigerator surfaces.

Alkaline detergents (pH 9+): They are used for greasy surfaces such as
greasy floors and walls, ovens, exhaust hoods above fryers and stove
tops.

6
Classification of Detergents according to
their pH (acidity or alkalinity):
Acidic detergents (pH -7): They are used for the removal of mineral
build-up, such as tarnish on metals or scale in dishwashers and urns.
Abrasive cleaners contain granules that scratch off soiling that is hard to
remove. These may take the form of pastes, creams or powders and are
used for cleaning hard surfaces.

7
SANTIZING Drums
Cleaning

o Sanitizers are used to reduce microorganisms, such

as bacteria, to safe levels. Sanitizing may be done
with chemicals or heat (very hot water).
o Chemical sanitizers (or disinfectants) are often
chlorine-based.
o Hot water above 75ºC can also kill microorganisms.
The higher the temperature, the shorter the contact
time required.
o Most hot water from taps runs at 50ºC to 55ºC and
therefore is not hot enough to be used as a sanitizer.
Crates

Some hot water units have a thermostat that can be

set at 80ºC to 85ºC.

8
COMBINED DETERGENT &
SANITISER CLEANING AGENTS:

Some products contain a mix

of detergent and a sanitizer;
however, these may not work
as effectively in combination
as they do separately.

9

⬢ Safety note:
⬢ When using chemical products,
instructions and safety warnings
provided on the label and contained
in the Material Safety Data Sheet
(MSDA) are to be followed. Often
this will mean wearing protective
clothing, such as gloves.

10
CLEANING STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES:
All cleaning strategies and activities should be planned, rather than just
left to a less busy time. If cleaning happens in a haphazard way,
something is likely to be overlooked or not done properly.
The best way to organize all the cleaning tasks is to prepare a cleaning
schedule

WHICH CLEARLY SETS OUT:-

WHAT is to be cleaned?
WHO is responsible for each task?
WHEN and WHY each task should be done?
HOW each task should be done (the chemical and
the method to be used)?
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS to be taken. Utensil
SUPERVISION to ensure everything is done correctly. Washer

11
The cleaning schedule: It helps to build a systematic procedure to do
cleaning in a safe and bigger way.

Choosing the right chemicals: The wrong cleaning product will not only be
ineffective, but can cause damage.
For example, an acid cleaner will discolor aluminum and abrasive cleaners
will damage a non-stick surface. If you are unsure of the right chemical
cleaner to use, check the equipment manufacturer instructions to see what
they recommend.

Working safely: It is important to know what the chemical is, how to use it
properly and what safety precautions you should take.
This information is generally printed on the label such as the name of the
product, whether it is a dangerous or hazardous substance, the ingredients,
and the possible harmful effects

12
AUTOMATION OF CLEANING
Benefits of Automation of cleaning process:

o It improves safety and output.

o It enhances process repeatability.
o It maintains critical quality parameters.
o It can smoothen the production environment.

13
NEW CLEANING PROCESSES &
TECHNOLOGIES:

• More advanced adaptable cleaning options are now being adopted
to meet application-specific requirements offering more flexibility
than standard options.
• Today, cleaning is a critical and integral part of many manufacturing
and processing plants.
• For example, in semi-conductor fabrication industry, etching-type
cleaning process is required for the careful removal of thin layers of
material
NEW CLEANING PROCESSES &
TECHNOLOGIES:
• For automation of cleaning a wide range of wet process equipment
is now available that can more flexibly accommodate specific
cleaning requirements.
• To fit to a specific application, these automated cleaning devices
can be modified to enhance cost-effective process repetition.
• Suitable minor modifications to the standard equipment in many
cases is done to get optimal return.
Fully automated cleaning systems:
Semi to fully automated, multitask cleaning stations typically use at
least four baths generally required in preprogramed recipe
sequences. Robot technology is being implemented here.

The number of tanks, robot location, movement speed, loading, as

well as sizing of thing is based on specific requirements for automated
stations.

16
Special automated cleaning systems:
Dry-to-dry basis self-contained special automated equipment is
required for cleaning and stripping of wafers, optics, disc drives, flat
panels and other delicate parts.

Semi-automated cleaning systems:

Compared to manual systems, semi-automated cleaning systems
provide better repeatability, faster production and added safety.
It is compact, software controlled, and usually easy to service.
This type of cleaning system is appropriate for MEMs, LEDs and
silicon applications.

17
CORROSION PROTECTION:
• Cleaning procedures are constantly being extended and place
higher and higher demands on hygienic design and corrosion
resistance.
• Intensive, strict wash down and disinfection processes are
required to the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
• Design and coating of machines to prevent corrosion for such
applications have to be smooth and ensure optimum cleaning
ability for manual or automated cleaning cycles.
• The special requirements in the processing of grain, by filling
and emptying of your grain silos, as well as the storage of
grain, demand holistic solutions.
• The special requirements in the processing of grain, by filling
and emptying of the grain silos, as well as the storage of
grain, demand holistic solutions.

18
Cleaning and corrosion protection with solvents:
The most frequently used technique is wet chemical cleaning, which uses any liquid chemical, such as
solvent or aqueous.
Non-halogenated hydrocarbons and modified alcohols demonstrate definite advantages.
They enable cleaning and corrosion protection processes—even long-term protection.
They also ensure reliable, efficient and sustainable removal of oils, coolants and chips.
Integrated vacuum distillation cleaning system is now in use to reduce solvent consumption
considerably and prevents corrosion.
Using emulsified oils in water-based systems, passivation technique is applied while cleaning the parts
to protect them from corrosion.

Standard corrosion resistant treatments:

Coating: Zinc coatings are particularly effective.
Chemical Plating: Nickel-phosphor alloy is typically used in chemical plating.
Browning: A salt or saline solution is used to create a corrosion-resistant surface of an object.
Phosphating: A solution of zinc phosphate and oil is applied to the surface.
Electroplating: The application of the chromium or silver onto an object.

19

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND RECYCLING:
• Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown
away as trash and turning them into new products.
• Recycling can benefit the community and the environment.

The effect of cleaning products on environment:

• Commercial use of cleaning products affects the indoor and outdoor environment.
• It can lead to pollution and waste.
• The volatile organic compounds (VOC) in cleaning products can affect indoor air quality and add to
outdoor smog.

Recycling offers an important environmental benefit by reducing air and water pollution and saving
energy.

It reduces emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and
chlorofluorocarbons, that contribute to global climate change.
